Witley Court was once a great house but is now just a spectacular, but rather sad, ruin. It's sad because the building has been reduced to this condition through years of neglect, initiated by the then owner, the Earl of Dudley, moving out due to a fire which affected just one wing of the house.
The house then lay empty, was subjected to looting, vandalism and the elements, before being sold to a demolition contractor. Finally, English Heritage aquired the property, so at least what is left won't be disappearing.
Witley Court was originally an early Jacobean manor house, converted to an Italianate mansion in the 19th century by John Nash. The result was a magnificent house standing in superbly landscaped gardens by William Nesfield.
From a distance, you could believe that Witley Court is still a fine home, because its outline is still largely intact.
The gardens are presently almost entirely grass but I understand there are plans for some restoration work. The fountains were in the process of being restored during my last visit and some work to the fabric of the building is being carried out.
Ensure that you pay a visit to the adjacent Parish Church which is an attraction in its own right, with stained glass, baroque architecture, a huge painting on the ceiling and a very interesting photo montage with news clippings telling some of the history of Witley Court and its demise. Photos of the interior splendour prior to the fire and aerial shots during the fire are featured.
Access to Witley Court is along a very rough driveway. Access to any of the rooms involves steps. The grounds have no hard or gravel paths. The church can be reached up a gently sloping path.
