Walmer Castle was a coastal artillery fort that was visited frequently by the Duke of Wellington during his 23 years as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, and the room in which the Duke died on 14 September 1852, has been left as it was on that day.
Although originally conceived as an important defence against Catholic attack from across the english Channel, Walmer Castle has evolved over the years into more of a country residence.
Other notable figures that have been appointed Lord Warden include the founder of the high street chain WH Smith, Sir Winston Churchill and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's mother. The Queen Mother stayed at Walmer Castle regularly, and some of the rooms used by her are open to the public, along with the Queen Mother's Garden, given to her on her 95th birthday.
