The Needles Old Battery was constructed in 1862 as a defence against French invasion. The fort is situated in a spectacular location, punctuating the tip of one of Britain's most famous coastal landmarks; The Needles.
Extending out into the sea from the chalk downs, The Needles are being gently eroded by the sea. The 124 foot tall Needle known as 'Lots Wife' succumbed to the waves in 1764. Now only 3 remain.
The National Trust has restored the laboratory, searchlight position and position finding cells. A 65m tunnel leads to stunning views of the Hampshire and Dorset coastline.
The nearest car park is 1 mile away. The paths to the Needles Old Battery are unsuitable for the disabled or those who experience difficulty walking.
