The Talyllyn Railway is a narrow-gauge steam railway running inland from Tywyn, Gwynedd to Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol. It was originally built to carry slate from Bryn Eglwys slate quarry. In 1951 it became the first railway in the world to be taken over and run by volunteers. All scheduled trains are hauled by coal-fired steam engines. Some of the locomotives and carriages date back to the line's opening in 1866 and are still in regular, day-to-day use.
At Tywyn Wharf station the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum illustrates the history of narrow gauge lines in the British Isles.
