Stourhead is one of the country's best examples of the English landscape style garden, created by Henry Hoare II between 1741-80. The Stourhead pleasure gardens were conceived as a series of spectacular vistas that include a central lake, classical temples, and mature woodland with some exotic specimens.
The house at Stourhead was begun by Colen Campbell in 1721 and contains fine furniture and paintings.
A red brick folley in the grounds, known as King Alfred's Tower and built in 1772 by Henry Flitcroft, stands some 50 metres high with commanding views over the Stourhead garden.
The gardens are accessible to the disabled. A chair climber is available to reach the house. Wheelchairs are available and also a self-drive vehicle for the garden.
