Madame Tussaud (originally Grosholtz) became the apprentice of her house keeper mother's employer, Dr Philippe Curtius, a waxwork model sculptor.
Madame Tussaud went on to become the art teacher for King Louis XVI's sister and at the time of the French Revolution she made death masks from the heads of prisoners who had been executed at the guillotine.
In 1794 Doctor Curtius died leaving his waxwork model collection to Madame Tussaud who moved to England in 1802.
