Lower Brockhampton is an attractive 14th century moated manorhouse that just ouses character. You cross the moat through a half timbered gatehouse. A steep staircase gives you access to the room over the gates.
Swallows nest in the eaves of the gatehouse and swoop down within inches of you as they scoop up insects from the moat to take to their young ones.
An attractive side and foregarden frame Lower Brockhampton. Only three rooms are open to the public and contain little by way of furnishings or clues to the history, over the centuries, of its' occupants, but then that's not what you're here for. You're here to look at the timber frame structure.
The great hall at Lower Brockhampton is entirely oak, and boy, is it dark in there. It gives you an appreciation of what it must have been like to live in this type of building - pretty gloomy, but very interesting nonetheless.
A steep staircase leads you to a gallery and further room.
Outside you can explore the remains of a chapel at the back of Lower Brockhampton and continue on around the moat, which broadens out into a pond, attracting waterfowl. To the side of the moat is the remains of an orchard.
The car park and house are about half a mile apart. A courtesy coach will take you their and back, but on a dry day the walk is very pleasant and takes about 10-15 minutes through beautiful parkland.
The NT stewards here are very heplful and enthusiastic. There are woodland walks and sculpture trails in the grounds.
Pushchair and wheelchair access to ground floor only.
Lower Brockhampton (NT) is adjacent to Brigsty Common, a delightful mix of ferns, grass paths and cottages. You may get a cuppa at the Herb nursery in the middle of the common.
Heading down the road towards Bromyard you will find Bromyard Downs overlooking Bromyard itself. It's hard to believe that at one time, cars were allowed to park on the steep grassy slope. Fortunately, there is just a small car park near to a pub now.
Bromyard itself is a sleepy little town, but has an interesting Heritage Centre focusing on the hop industry. During the summer Bromyard Gala is not to be missed for its' steam engines, fair and many other events.
