Little Moreton Hall is one of the finest examples of a timber framed moated manor house in Britain. Parts of the building date back 600 years, yet most of the oak frame is original, although its shape has changed quite significantly in places. This is probably most evident in the Long Gallery at the top of the house, where the floor undulates dramatically.
A footbridge crosses the moat (filled with koi carp) to the south front which leads on to the cobbled courtyard. Here you can see the main part of the hall and admire the fascinating shape of the structure. Access to the rooms, which are largely unfurnished, is from the courtyard.
Free guided tours are available at certain times of the day and I can throughly recommend these to you. The guided tour gives you an insight into how the house evolved over the years and the type of gentleman that John Moreton was.
To the rear of the house a formal knot garden has been recreated.
Disabled access is to the ground floor and garden only.
Biddulph Grange Garden is a short distance away and well worth a visit. A discounted joint ticket will take you into both venues.
