Lamb House is a Georgian house dating from 1723 when completed by James Lamb. The Lamb family were a force to be reckoned with in Rye for 150 years; James Lamb was elected Mayor 13 times and his son, George, went on to hold the office for 20 years!
George Lamb was named after George I, who was his godfather. Apparently, George I's ship was driven ashore in bad weather and the Lamb's accommodated the King for 4 nights. Mrs Lamb was expecting and George Lamb was delivered on the King's first night at the house!
Novelist Henry James lived at Lamb House from 1898 to 1916 and wrote several of his books there, in the green room in the winter and in a gaden pavilion during the summer. Unfortunately the pavilion was destroyed by a bomb in WWII, but a room in the house contains many of James personnel possessions and several pictures of him.
There is a large walled garden. No toilet facilities. House is administered and maintained on behalf of the Trust by a tenant
