Knole is one of Englands great houses largely unaltered since 1603, and standing in a deer park. A house has stood at Knole since 1291, but what we see today is largely thanks to Thomas Sackville, who spent considerable sums of money developing Knole.
The house doesn't appear to have been made to any grand design, it is more of an evolutionary building, but on a vast -scale covering some 4 acres!
13 state rooms are open to the public and contain fine collections with some unique Jacobean furniture, tapestries, the prototype of the famous Knole settee and paintings by Gainsborough, Van Dyck Reynolds and Hoppner.
Knole has not one, but three, long galleries, each with an adjoining state bedroom. The King's Bedroom contains a bed dating from the 17th century which apparently cost ᆪ40,000. It is decorated with gold and silver thread, topped off with ostrich feathers.
