Harewood House was designed by John Carr and completed in 1772. It sits in 1,000 acres of grounds landscaped by Capability Brown and has an interior by Robert Adam.
Harewood has many fine paintings by artists such as Turner, Girtin and Varley. Chippendale furniture features prominently throughout the house. It is one of only three houses in England (the others being Nostell and Osterley) where complete accounts exist that prove the furniture was by Chippendale. Sevres and Crown Derby china are on display along with a collection of Chinese porcelain.
The recently refurbished Princess Mary's Sitting Room now has two magnificent Chippendale mirrors - not seen for over 100 years!
Harewood house offers visitors a wide range of attractions including touring the house, gardens, bird garden, lakeside walks, and special events throughout the season.
The adventure playground is one of the biggest in the North of England. The Bird Garden has over 600 birds including penguins, flamingos and parrots. A cafe and shops are located around the Stables Courtyard.
Access for disabled visitors is good although Harewood House is on a sloping site. Some areas are inaccessible to wheelchair users and there are some gravel paths.
