Eastnor Castle is a wonderful Victorian creation in the Gothic style by Sir Robert Smirke built betwen 1810 - 1816, for the 1st Earl of Somers.
The Castle is in a delightful location overlooking a lake, adjacent to an aboretum, and encirled by the Malvern Hills. The lake covers over 20 acres, with huge areas covered by lilly pads. The walk around the lake rewards you with several fine views of the Castle.
Inside Eastnor Castle you are immediately aware of the warm, homely atmosphere that has been created by the present owners, in what is a very imposing building.
The Great Hall has a very high ceiling for the size of room, yet is remarkably light and airy. Here you'll see the first of many suits of armour throughout the house, and also 'big game' trophies starring down at you from the walls!
Family crests are used as a decorative feature in many of the rooms, and usually on the ceilings - and what ceilings! The ground floor ceilings are all decorated in quite different styles. My personal favourite ceiling is in the Gothic Drawing Room, which features ornate plasterwork, family crests and lots of hand painted detail. The Chinese Bedroom ceiling has a painted 'scene'.
Many of the bedrooms on the first floor enjoy views across the lake and aboretum, and all have a warm and comfortable style.
Tapestries, fine furniture and paintings by the likes of Watts, Wootten, Van Dyck and Romney can be seen around the house, along with many personal family effects, which give Eastnor Castle its individual character.
A large lawn in a valley is set aside as a picnic area which is also adjacent to an adventure play area.
Part of the 6,000 acre estate includes a 300 acre deer park, once a mediaeval chase, and now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
