Dudley Zoo continues to be in the forefront of the latest zoological thinking and works with other zoos throughout Britain and the rest of the world to save animals from extinction.
About 120 animals are born here every year and we were the first zoo in Britain to breed Nile Crocodiles and the Puna Ibis wading bird. We care for more than 30 species which are listed in the Red Data Book for threatened species drawn up by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
Dudley is involved in many breeding projects, six of which form part of the European Co-ordinated Breeding Programme, and we have a representative on the European Breeding Programme for Black Lemurs. We also have representatives on eight Taxon Advisory Groups which advise on the captive breeding policy for different animals and we hold the chair of the Group responsible for insects and spiders. We maintain the vitally important UK Regional Studbooks of both the Arabian Gazelle and the Macaroni Penguin.
