There have been mills on the site of the present Daniels Mill as far back as the 15th century when it was known as Dunnings Mill. At this time the mill building would have been quite a simple affair with a wooden waterwheel, and not until the 17th century did the mill have its own living accommodation.
At this time a second mill was built just below the top pool and was known as the "The Mill in the Hole". Not much remains of this mill, but during 2008 excavation work was carried out to reveal more of it.
The waterwheel you see today arrived in the mid 19th century and is an impressive size, claiming the title of the largest waterwheel powering a working corn mill in England.
The present miller's family have owned Daniels Mill for over 250 years and his father was grinding all kinds of grain for animal feed until 1957, when he past away. In 1958 Alan George (the present miller) began restoration of the mill carrying out all of the work himself, restoring it to its former glory.
Unfortunately in June 2007 serious flooding in the area washed tonnes of mud from the valley and ballast from the Severn Valley Railway line through the mill causing serious damage. With the help of grants and several months hard work Daniels Mill re-opened in July 2008.
Crossing the mill valley and top pool is Oldbury Viaduct carrying the Severn Valley Railway into Bridgnorth which is only about half a mile from Daniels Mill. You can enjoy a pleasant walk under the viaduct around the mill pools.
There are guided tours, a tea room with scones made from their own milled flour, and a gift shop where you can buy 100% wholemeal flour.
