Croft Castle is more a fortified house than a castle. It sits on the hillside below Croft Ambrey hill fort looking out towards the River Lugg over beautiful open countryside.
The interior of Croft Castle is comfortable and finely decorated with many ornate plaster ceilings.
The walled garden is well planted.
Parking is near to Croft Castle and access for pushchairs and wheelchairs is good with just one ramped step. Some paths in the garden are gravel. Picnicing is allowed only in the car park. Toilets are adjacent to the house.
Other places to visit in the area are Bircher Common (NT), which is almost alongside Croft Castle. The Common and Croft Ambrey are part of the Mortimer Way, which runs across these beautiful hills to the High Vinnalls.
Berrington Hall (NT) is a short drive and well worth a visit.
Only a little further away is the market town of Ludlow, an essential stopping off point if you're in this area. Here you'll find another castle, and many black and white half timbered buildings.
This area is almost totally unspoilt and, thankfully, uncommercialised.
