Clun Castle is a small Marcher fortress sitting on a rocky outcrop on the edge of the town. The motte and bailey castle was built around 1150 by the Norman, Robert de Say.
Enough of the castle survives to make it worth a visit. From the town, the castle is barely visible, but is quite a striking site when approaching Clun from the west. The River Clun flows through the meadow surrounding the castle. You can picnic in the grounds.
Bury Ditches are only a short distance away and offer superb panoramic views.
Attractions near Clun Castle include Newtown, Bury Ditches at Clunton, Walcot Hall near Lydbury North, Decorative Antiques at Bishops Castle, Stokesay Castle near Stokesay, Acton Scott Historic Working Farm at Stretton, Lunlow Golf Club near Ludlow.
