As you approach Chirk Castle, you can't help but be impressed by the solidity of this structure; the turrets taper gently outwards towards the base to a diameter that would encircle the average detached home! The stone exterior is quite plain, further reinforcing the impression of a formidible Marcher stronghold.
The intimidating exterior gives way to a welcoming courtyard from where you gain access to the state rooms.
The interior retains the character that you would expect from a building dating back to 1310. Their are many paintings and tapestries to be seen in the numerous rooms you can visit. Some rooms have commanding views over the surrounding countryside.
The promise of a trip to the dungeon may keep the kids amused.
Modestly sized, formal gardens have roses and clipped yew hedging. There are walks in the parkland and in the wooded valley adjacent to the car park and Castle.
A courtesy coach can take you up the steep climb from the car park to the castle. Wheelchair access to state rooms is by stairclimber. Formal garden is flat with gravel paths. Toilets are adjacent to the car park.
