Thomas Carlyle was an historian and philospher who lived in this 18th Century terraced house for some 30 years from 1834 until his death.
The house also reflects the strong personality of Carlyle's wife; photgraphs, portraits, shawls and other personal effects, can be seen around the house, as well as furniture and many books.
Many famous poeple of the Victorian era visited the house including Chopin, Tennyson, Dickens and George Elliot.
There is also a restored Victorian walled garden.
