Carew Castle is situated in quite a romantic location, overlooking a huge mill pond that feeds the nearby Tidal Mill. The first record of a castle on this site dates from 1100, but a Roman Fort could have been here prior to this.
The location of the castle may seem unusual, given its low-lying site, but its purpose was to protect the ford over the Carew River.
Carew French Tidal Mill contains all its original machinery and affords a good view of the castle - well worth a visit. There is a tea garden close to the mill.
Attractions near Carew Castle include Pembroke, Great Dinosaur Experience at Tenby, Oakwood Coaster Country near Narberth, Colby Woodland Garden at Narberth, Kaleidoscope Discovery Centre near Milford Haven, Riverside Quay at Haverfordwest, Palace Cinema near Haverfordwest.
