Berrington Hall was designed by Henry Holland and built in the late 18th century. It stands in grounds lanscaped by Capability Brown.
It is constructed of large sandstone blocks which give it a rather severe appearance. A commanding view from the entrance across the parkland and lake takes your eye to the Brecon Beacons in the distance.
Inside Berrington Hall is an attractive staircase, nursery, detailed plaster ceilings and furniture. This property has retained the character brought to it by generations of families which is occasionally lacking in other Trust properties.
A courtyard at the back of Berrington Hall is surrounded on 3 sides by sandstone coach houses, servants hall and stores which now house the NT shop, Edwardian tea room and licensed restaurant.
Also off the courtyard is the Victorian laundry. I find these below stairs areas fascinating, and the Trust should make more of a feature of these areas in other properties. The conditions here are in stark contrast to the main house.
The garden at Berrington Hall is largely unspectacular, but parents will be pleased to see a log type adventure play area, to give the kids (and you) a welcome break. Go through the walled garden to reach it. Lets hope we some more of these (sited discretely of course) at more Trust properties.
Picnic benches in the car park. Reasonable access for pushchairs and wheelchairs. 12 steps up to entrance. No wheelchair access to licensed restaurant because of 5 steps to descend. Apparently they will set up a table in the courtyard on request on fine days. Toilets are off the courtyard.
Also in the locality are Croft Castle (NT), Bircher Common (NT), Mortimer Way, High Vinnalls and Ludlow.
