Bateman's is a Jacobean style house built in 1634 by a local builder. It features mullioned windows, gables with finials, a three storey porch and the fashionable decorative chimneys of the time.
From 1902 to 1936 this was the home of the author Rudyard Kipling, and the interior is pretty much as it was in his time there. Much can be seen that relected Kipling's interest in the East; Oriental rugs, silk embroidery, porcleain and bronzes.
Kipling wrote many of his books sitting at the huge chestnut desk in his study, surrounded by his library. The hill mentioned on Puck of Pook's Hill can be sen from the house. A large waste paper basket lurks beneath Kipling's desk and his seat is raised on blocks for optimum working height.
Parts of the garden were designed by Kipling. The grounds extend to a watermill on the banks of the River Dudwell and contain roses, wild flowers and herbs. Kipling's Rolls Royce can also be seen.
The ground floor and gardens are accessible for the disabled.
