Emslie Horniman bought an acre of land in 1913 offering it to the council with the condition that it was to be for the people of London as a recreation ground. Consisting of formal Spanish style gardens complete with lawns, shrubs, flowers, mature trees, arbours and oak pergolas.
The gardens have an innovative under eights playground area with a plethora of primary colours. There are also three flood lit tennis courts, two floodlit tarmac football pitches for 5/7 a side and changing rooms.
Several contemporary works of art can be found in the garden. The Vosey walled garden of rendered white concrete, with flower beds which are surrounded by a small moat, named after the architect Charles Vosey who designed the garden, has undergone a complete refurbishment back to its original design and planting arrangement. Some of Voseys much admired drawings can be seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
This historic park reopened in 1998 after major refurbishment, re-design and modernisation thanks to a grant received by The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The park hosts the Notting Hill Carnival to over 20,000 people.
