The Vaudeville Theatre

In the West End of London, located on The Strand, The Vaudeville Theatre has the capacity to seat some 690 theatre goers. Rebuilt twice during its lifetime, the Vaudeville has retained the character of the front elevation from its first rebuild.

The original building was designed by Architect CJ Phipps, and was effectively grafted onto the facade of an existing structure on the site. The theatre opened its doors on April 16th 1870 with a rather cramped seating arrangement for 1,000, to a performance of 'For Love Or Money'.

In 1891, CJ Phipps was called upon once again, but this time to redesign the front elevation of the building, which is the one that you see today.

In 1925 the Vaudeville received a new interior to designs by Robert Atkins. It re-opened in February 1926 with reduced capacity but more spacious seating arrangements through the raising of the roof and lowering the basement.

The public first gained access on 10th September 1892, with its original name of the Trafalgar Square London, to honour the future King George V, the theatre was re-named The Duke of York's Theatre during 1895.

During the 1970's Capital Radio purchased the freehold and closed the theatre in order to refurbish it, opening again in February 1980.

In 1992 the theatre was purchased by the Ambassador Theatre Group, the theatre has since seen a host of sell out productions with well known stars performing.
