The Theatre Royal Haymarket

The Theatre Royal Haymarket is a beautiful white building, with 6 pillars marking the entrance. The original theatre was constructed in the same street but a bit further along. The current theatre, designed by John Nash, has now been in its current position since 1821.

During 1837 the theatre in London had gas lighting installed, until then performances were by candlelight. This theatre started a trend amongst others by making the first matinee performance in 1873, others soon quickly adopted this practice.

1879 saw the Theatre Royal's auditorium and stage redesigned to form the first picture frame proscenium and orchestra stalls replaced the pit. Major refurbishment began during 1994, totalling £1.3 million, but during a performance in May of 2004 it had to close as 13 people suffered injuries when plaster work fell on them during a performance. During its long life the theatre has been host to many productions such as the musical Acorn Antiques, with the famous Julie Waters, Neil Morrissey and Josie Laurence running for 8 weeks.

The public first gained access on 10th September 1892, with its original name of the Trafalgar Square London, to honour the future King George V, the theatre was re-named The Duke of York's Theatre during 1895.

During the 1970's Capital Radio purchased the freehold and closed the theatre in order to refurbish it, opening again in February 1980.

In 1992 the theatre was purchased by the Ambassador Theatre Group, the theatre has since seen a host of sell out productions with well known stars performing.
