Although only completed in 2000, London Eye has become one of the capital's most iconic symbols. Standing at 135 metres high with 32 passenger carrying pods, one for each London borough, London Eye is the highest observation wheel in the world offering visitors a 30 minute ride that on a clear day will allow them to see for approximately 40km.

As long ago as 1894, London had a 90 metre high big wheel, located at the site of what is now Earl's Court. This was modelled on a big wheel made by George Ferris for an exposition in Chicago the previous year. The Earl's Court wheel had 40 gondolas each capable of carrying 30 passengers, enabling it to carry 50% more people than the London Eye! The Earl's Court big wheel remained in service until 1906.
