Earls Court Exhibition Centre

Earls Court is one of the best known exhibition centres in the UK, hosting events such as the Ideal Home Show and the Boat Show, for which it is uniquely equipped with a huge swimming pool some 60m by 20m, taking about 2 days to fill!

The site on which Earls Court stands had a history as an entertainment ground before the exhibition centre was constructed. Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show was a regular spectacle attended by large audiences, including Queen Victoria. A big wheel was built as part of an exhibition in 1894. It was something of a precursor to the London Eye, standing 90 meters high and carrying up to 1200 passengers.

Plans to construct Earls Court began in 1935, with the intention of rivaling the nearby Olympia by creating Europe's largest covered open space. American architect C Howard Crane designed a triangular building to suit the awkward shape of the site which is bounded by railway lines and crossed by the tube. The tube and railways added additional complexity to the foundations and the project ran over budget and schedule, eventually being completed in 1937.

The building, now known as Earls Court One, is constructed entirely from reinforced concrete, with the exception of the steel roof trusses, which span the colossal 41,800 square metre, column free space.

The 17,000 square metre Earls Court Two opened in 1991 to meet the demand for even more exhibition space.

Public Transport is the best way to reach the exhibition centre using the Earls Court underground station for Earls Court One and West Brompton underground and overground station for Earls Court Two.

If arriving by car you should plan your parking arrangements in advance. There is a multi-storey car park adjacent to Earls Court Two, but spaces are limited, and you would be well advised to book a space online in advance, which is also considerably cheaper. Fine example of an original Victorian townhouse once owned by Edward Linley Sambourne; a cartoonist (born in 1844), and his family from the year 1874. This amazing property still retains all of the original fittings and furniture from the family, and the house remained unchanged over time.

Edward Sambourne had a passion for drawing caricatures of animals and people - some of his early works were in Punch magazine, and his career with them spanned 43 years.

He began experimenting with photography and illustrations for Macmillan publishers. A large collection of photographs, cartoons, drawings, glass plate negatives and cyanotypes have survived. Some of these adorn the walls of Linley House. Collections of French clocks, Italian bronzes, Eastern and oriental vases and plates survive.

Arranged over five floors, 3 of which are visited on the tour, with access via steep steps. The house was owned by the Greater London Council and run by the Victorian Society as a museum. It was opened up to the public in the Autumn of 1980. After the abolition of the Council the museum is now owned by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Further catalogued papers, diaries, and history of the house can be seen at the Kensington Central Library.

Linley house is situated just two minutes walk from Kensington High Street and the Commonwealth Institute, close to numerous restaurants and cafes, and near Leighton House Museum.
