Dulwich Picture Gallery is one of the hidden gems of Southwark containing an outstanding collection of Old Masters, mainly from the seventeenth and eighteenth century.
The collection owes its existence to Stanislaus II Augustus, King of Poland, and lover of Catherine the Great. He commissioned Noel Desenfans, a London art dealer, to build a collection for a proposed National Gallery in Warsaw.
When Stanislaus had to abdicate in 1795 he left the collection unpaid for. After the British Government had rejected a proposal to establish a national gallery the collection was left to Dulwich College.
