Hotels near Blists Hill Victorian Town

Blists Hill is a marvellous recreation of a small Victorian town complete with pub, bank, chemist, grocers, cobbler, candlemaker, school, photographers, printers, bakery and sweetshop. The staff all wear Victorian costume which adds to the authentic atmosphere.

There are a number of examples of industrial heritage including a working mineshaft with steam powered winding engine, the remains of blast furnaces, an ironworks with rolling mill, a foundry and several other types of business.

The museum opened in 1973 as 'Blists Hill Open Air Museum' on a derelict industrial site which had on it a stretch of the Shropshire Union canal, a disused blast furnace, the remains of a brick and tile works and the Hay Inclined Plane.

Local buildings of interest that faced demolition were saved, moved brick by brick to Blists Hill, and faithfully rebuilt. Other buildings are replicas of existing ones, such as the bank, which is a copy of one still standing in Broseley. Over the years Blists Hill has evolved into the Victorian town we see today.
