Adelphi Theatre

The Adelphi Theatre is situated in the Strand London, and the fourth theatre to be built on the same site, the first being constructed by Mr Jay of London in 1806 and going by the name of Sans Pareil, it later changed to its present name in 1819.

The current theatre was built by Pitcher Construction Company and opened in 1930 on the 3rd December. Seating 1,400 people, the Adelphi has a beautiful hanging chandelier, warm colours of green, orange, gold and bronze adorn the walls, and the interiors are all straight lines and angles, no curves throughout the theatre.

The name for the theatre was taken from a row of terraces that resided between the River Thames and The Strand. These houses had been constructed by the Adam Brothers, which in Greek translates to Adelphoi brothers.

This West End theatre has been home to many productions in its history including My Fair Lady, Jungle Book, Me and My Girl, Chicago, and Evita, the current production being Joseph with Gareth Gates taking the leading role in 2009.

The public first gained access on 10th September 1892, with its original name of the Trafalgar Square London, to honour the future King George V, the theatre was re-named The Duke of York's Theatre during 1895.

During the 1970's Capital Radio purchased the freehold and closed the theatre in order to refurbish it, opening again in February 1980.

In 1992 the theatre was purchased by the Ambassador Theatre Group, the theatre has since seen a host of sell out productions with well known stars performing.
