"Hated it - if I was an "Hotel Inspector" - I would close this hotel!"
Hardly any good points. Hotel looks great from the outside - that's about all. Breakfast was adequate albeit toast was burnt, coffee was like tap-water.
Hotel does not have adequate lighting on the stairs which are steep. This is dangerous so I reported it. The room was filthy, particulary around the bed edge which was stained and disgusting. Dust was evident in all parts of the room and especially around the skirting. The toilet needed a good clean and was stained. I would have cleaned it myself had the toilet brush not been so filthy.

the price was very reasonable making an excellent out of season break hotel was nice and it was good to be able to get value for money meals on site
although the meals were good value and quality i had a cottage pie on one occasion and there were no allergy warnings to say it contained egg i ate some and because i am allergic to eggs was promptly very sick for the next 3 hours my partner mention this to staff who were not very apologetic, this obviously spoilt our stay which otherwise would have been good

Good location.
Check in poor. No explanation of how to operate lights, TV etc.

"Convenient for the Science Centre - would probably recommend and use again, but the 'new management' haven't exactly made things easy for themselves!"
The four-poster room was excellent, spacious and comfy, if not very thoroughly cleaned. The double-bath was great although a shower would have been handy. The standard double room was quiet and had a lovely view but felt cramped.
No a la carte restaurant. Items missing a breakfast, blamed on 'new management'. Noone at reception at check-in and check-out. Bad smell in reception at check-in. Car park full of potholes.

"Good, although the walls were a little thin and the snoring of the occupants of the adjoining room kept my husband awake."
Helpfu and friendy staff allowed us to have breakfast early as I needed to trave back to Wales in the morning.
There was no one around AT ALL when we tried to check in.

"Stayed in lots of hotels over the past year, this was one of the worst. The hotel looks lovely from the outside, it's only when you walk upstairs and see the rooms that you realise that things aren't what you expected."
The staff were helpful when you could find someone. There was plenty of hot water for showers.
The room was filthy, underwear left in drawers by previous occupant. Bed linen not changed, beds not made and room not cleaned/vacuumed during our stay. No broadband log in information in room had to wait until following day and ask staff for the details. The light outside our door only stayed on long enough for us to get the key in the lock.

"Overall, a comfortable and pleasant stay. Staff couldn't be more helpful. Just feel that a little freshening up of the rooms wouldn't go amiss."
A very attractive hotel, good location, and parking. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was like a curate's egg - good in parts!! Beds very comfortable.
Our room hadn't been cleaned, so the carpet was messy. No problem getting it done - staff very concerned. Food, again, good in parts. Very disappointed to get tinned mushrooms at breakfast!

"Dissapointment"
Cosy old hotel
This was my second visit within a few weeks and this time it was much worse! No hot water in the shower they could not fix it nor give us another twin room, we had to use the shower of another room which we accepted, what else to do?, not tidy, dusty room, no digital unit for the TV, no toast with the full English breakfast and too cold served, no service. Sorry, this was much worse!

Pleasant hotel
When booking we booked room with two children only to find after paying that the children had to be under 12. We then had to contact hotel direct, cancel booking on line and rearrange. More clarity on booking please

"We really enjoyed our stay in this fantastic old inn, no real bad points. Lots of nice things to see in the neighbourhood. Friendly staff, also my 4-year old son reall enjoyed the stay."
great building, nice and quiet environment, friendly staff, adequate breakfast not particularly large, but excellent quality, room was cosy and value for money, great bed!
acoustic isolation of the rooms, breakfast time limited to 1.5 hours. No real children facilities.

"I have told as many people as possible of my extremely disappointing stay here and recommended that they do not stay at this miserable hotel. I understand that there are a number of very nice b&B and hotels in the area which are far cheaper, cleaner and friendlier. "
The sheets on the bed were clean.
Probably the most unwelcoming hotel I have stayed in for may years. Grubby reception area, stairs and corridors. Dead flowers on reception desk -not very welcoming. Dead flowers on the breakfast tables. Dusters and milk left lying around on upstairs corridor. Dark, very grubby, unwelcoming dining room. No-one available to serve or take breakfast order for about 15 minutes. Extremely unpleasant coffee. I was asked to sign a blank form and told they would fill in the amount above my signature to debit my card at a later date. I asked them to complete the amount first. Staff were abrupt, loud and took personal calls while customers were waiting at reception. Outside, the building was dilapidated with tiles falling from the roof below the bedroom window and the lead pealing off. Extremely expensive for the standard of accommodation, food and service.

"The staff are good and I like the area. I would be more fussy about accepting a room of poor quality again."
Staff were friendly.
Room was 'tired', tv remote did not work, no free view facility. End of wardrobe was falling off. If we had been staying more than one night we would have asked for a room change or repairs to be done. Felt that the rooms needed a refurbishment programme.

Staff apologetic and helpful upon complaint of condition of room
Badly marked carpet/wallpaper peeling off/dusty surfaces/curtain hanging off hooks on rail/toilet seat would not stay up/paint marks on wallpaper.

"Overal the stay was good although the heating needs to be sorted out. The rooms were a little tired looking and culd do with an overhaul however the bathroom was large and modern with a very good shower. "
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was excellent and good value for money. We slept extremly well and there was no noise factor. The hotel looked inviting
The room was very tired looking and the carpet was dirty and stained. On arrival the room was freezing. The radiators did not work. The electric fire was not able to heat the room adaquately although it was a very cold and windy night. We was not warned that we could not pay our bar bill till after 10am next morning thus delaying our onward journey

Very friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Clean and comfortable accommodation. Food was excellent, first class - a very enjoyable meal Saturday evening.

"Wouldn't stay there again."
Restaurant closed - no chef! Hotel that size should have at least 1 standby Chef! Tea making facilities incomplete - no cups and saucers. No staff on reception - had to hunt round for staff member. Internet is not available all over hotel as stated. No staff member on duty in morning to complete checkout - just walked out and left key on top of entrance cabinet. Freeview TV box on floor in room amidst a jumble of wires.

"Hotel was a nice olde looking hotel which we like and were kind enough to let us put our bikes somewhere safer than leaving them on the car."
The hotel/room was clean and the double power shower was a great size.
Asked for a extra bed for my 6 year old and this was not done. Receptionist said if not there to help ourselves to one down the corridor! To be honest there was no room in the room to put up the other bed so we did not bother. At breakfast - asked for a boiled egg for my daughter as too young to want to eat a full english but was told no they do not offer this just poached egg! Surely putting a egg in a pan for 10 mins is easier than a pouched egg. The waitress only asked if we wanted cereal or cooked breakfast but we did not have a choose as to what our cooked was made up from.

"Not good this is basically a pub that operates rooms as an after thought Clearly there is no interest in generating return custom at all. I felt uncomfortable and unable to relax"
Room adequate considering cost nothing special though
Initially sent to a room that was not clean the bedding was not changed The restraunt was closed but no one told me on check in food was very Limited choice of just 4 dishes! Not great for a lone female traveller Especially when the hotel bans take out foods. When you could find staff They were helpful and pleasant.

"All in all, a perfectly comfortable place at which to stay for a night or two. Just a little more attention to detail and refurbishment of the public areas would take it to the next level."
The recently refurbished room was comfortable and clean, although not spacious. Likewise, the bathroom was clean and recently refitted. A good quality over bath shower was fitted, and hot water was plentiful.
It was a little disappointing that the bathroom door could not be shut properly, due to the wood having expanded or warped. Also, one light in the bedroom wasn't working and one in the quite dark external corridor was non-operational which made locking and unlocking the bedroom door a little fiddly.

"I was checking the hotel out for my Directors to stay in but on reflection I could not recommend it. I retreated early without sampling the breakfast. My stay was about three hours. The toilet brush in the en-suite was covered in poo and the heating was off even on a cold night. "
Hotel room was good.
The check in was long and arduous. The young man on the desk was ignorant, did not know what he was doing. He had no interest in selling the business at all aing me eye contact on brief occasions.nd certainly would benefit from some customer relations training. I waited for ages to be served at the bar whilst the three staff there carried out a conversation with each other.
