"Worst hotel I have ever stayed at."

Hotel was generally rundown. Heating did not work, curtains were hanging from rails and stained, carpet was threadbare in places, bath was mouldy, windows were cracked and dirty. Very noisy at night as no mention of it being next to a nightclub on the internet.

"Not an appropriate hotel for a group of adults of senior age. OK for those who want to stay up late. "

Helpful Staff, central location, good breakfast

Cold night but no heating, no extra blankets, disco in full swing on the ground floor which may be a nightly occurence but not mentioned in the web details.

"Good location but poor quality hotel for the price we paid asked to move rooms but unable to no available rooms asked for money back and was refused!!!"

    Location of hotel

Had to stand and wait 25 minutes for soneone to come and book us in at the reception No heating provdided apart from mini desk heater which did not provide much heat at all mould on the bathroom ceiling and walls and stunk curtains were not big enough to cover the window which made the room cold and draughty. Waited 40 minutes for breakfast in the morning where we sat in a cold room because of the heating not working

"Very good location abd value for money"

Very good hotel, near city centre

Poorly sign-posted as it is not exactly on the main road but down a side passage, we had to phone them to find out where they were

"This is by no means the best hotel i have stayed in but for the price there are definately no complaints. If you are after somewhere to lay your head right in the city centre for an extremely reasonable price i would definately recommend it!"

All required facilities available in room. Nice big bed with no extra charge for single occupancy in a double room. Excellent location. Friendly staff. Great value for money.

Some facilities inadequate - no remote for TV, DVD player available but not working, shower not the best. Windows open on arrival so room a little cold. Standards of cleanliness could be better although bedding towels etc were all freshly cleaned so no worries there!

"Great location, good breakfast. Dirty and would not stay again...and believe me we are not picky. We only ask that a place be clean. Was neverous about breakfast because of the lack of hygiene. On a busy and loud street if staying on weekends. Still, location great. Front door of hotel was not visible from street and no parking. Paid for garage parking all night."

    Good location, good breakfast

Hard to find and dirty. Toilet had not been cleaned nasty spots that I will put into further detail and the bedpread had a suspicious 'white spot' which could have been removed in one washing. Looked like someone had tried to rub it out with a cloth. Bare was only a place to get liquor, but not and actual bar. Security code did not work, as the door could be opened by hand. Place was worn with carpet stains, but this could have been overlooked had the room been cleaned at at least bathrooms washed/room vacuumed.

wasnt able to checkinto room till 2.45,not 2pm.their was no hot water on saturday evening for a shower,or sunday morning either.the staff knew about it on saturday, but never told us,and didnt know about it on the sunday until we told them on check out.the view of the mutilstory carpark was lovley, the windows were not very good at keeping the noise out,i thought they were open all night. And the bottle banks being emptied at about 4am capped it all!!!!over all the worst hotel ive stayed in ever and no were near as good as a travel lodge!!!

"Due to decor and low temperature in the hotel I would explore other options before staying here again, even if paying a little more."

Breakfast enjoyable, both food and staff. Reception staff pleasant. Central location convenient for restaurants and Hilton hotel conference venue. Iron and mini ironing board available in the room.

No heating on in early October, insufficient bed covers kept waking up cold, room right over night club. Didn't notice any way of drawing reception staff's attention if they weren't standing at the desk. Poor decor in bathroom.

"I have stayed in 'better' hotels and received a much worse service. I would go back again - it was very good value for money and perfectly placed for my work at the theatre in Grey Street."

I had asked for a quiet room knowing that this hotel was in a busy area and had no disturbance during the night. The room was spacious and provided a telephone, a television - that worked - and a comfortable bed. A working shower with ample hot water and a working hairdryer was more than had been provided in many more expensive hotels. The receptionist was charming when I arrived at midnight and the breakfast in the morning was prompt and tasty.

It's tricky to find - it's through a car park in Dean Street, but I was given good directions when I phoned for help. The lift wasn't working, which would have disadvantaged anyone with more luggage than I had, but the receptionist offered help.

"great location and brilliant room size with friendly staff"

the room was a lovely size I have never stayed in such a large hotel room with windows all round very light and clean

the beds were pretty narrow and the bedding not very sufficient as it got quite cold in the room the breakfast selection was not very varied and the smell of greasy food seemed to travel throughout the hotel in the morning which put some of my colleagues off eating

    Bathroom a bit dated

  • 50% Young couple

from Northallerton UK, stayed on February 23, 2009

"Overall the 'hotel' was more of a cross between a youth hostel and a cheap B&B and certainly wasn't worth the £80 per night price tag. That said it was clean, warm and dry and for one nights stay that was ok. I won't be rushing back though and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. "

The location was perfect for us. It was close to the Quayside and within good walking distance of the shops etc. The hotel was clean and the main facilities ie shower, toilet etc worked. Breakfast wasn't as bad as some of the previous reviews had indicated. It was certainly edible and cereal and toast were unlimited should you not want full english.

The hotel reception gave the impression of modern day sophistication, however once you get through the doors to the rooms it looks nothing more than a cheap B&B. The decor throughout is old and worn and the furniture in the rooms is very dated. Having already read the reviews we were prepared for the noise of the nightclub downstairs but it was louder than expected as the hotel has made not effort to sound proof the rooms.

Staff were friendly and efficient, room was adequate and good value. Breakfast was again good value with a nice light dining room

Difficult to find , even with benefit of Multi map. They could do with a sign actually on Dean St.My advice is to look for the Dean St car park sign and head up the alley way!

"Very pleasant, the room was clean, tidy and spacious with the added feature of a sofa which was very comfortable and relaxing. The staff were very helpful and pleasant, the breakfast room was bright, the service was quick and the breakfast was great, everything you need to keep you going for the day. Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Surtees Hotel, a very good find and we are definately back next year, we booked before we left."

The hotel is in an excellent position and suited our needs perfectly, 5 mins from the train station and 10 mins from the Metro Radio Arena. It was very close to the shopping centre and the quay, a very pleasant walk.

None, a little noisy from the bars just below but not a great problem, hasn't stopped us booking again next year.

"We only stayed for one night but enjoyed our time there. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and a good size with plenty of clean towels and extra pillows. The breakfast was great and we would definately choose to stay there again as long as we got a room up on the 3rd floor again"

Quick easy and welcoming check in. A very nice modern lounge / bar area, large spacious bedroom and not forgetting the great old fashioned lift! The breakfast dining area looked recently refurbished and clean / modern. The service and food were very enjoyable.

The bar sold wine but didn't have a corkscrew so unable to open the bottle! A couple of points in the bathroom, one of the sink taps was missing a part off the top minor really and the shower curtain had mildew growing on the bottom of it. The remote control for the T.V didn't work so only had 3 channels.

"Hotel was poor and in serious need of restoration"

Struggling to find any? actually none.

My room was directly opposite a fully lit car park, even with curtains closed I could read, it was so bright . The taps did not work properly, turn the to the cold in the shower and you would get hot water, turn to the hot and you get cold water, nice safety hazard. No remote control for the TV

"Great place to stay - would recommend it to others."

We had been on the road for over three weeks and were grateful for WI-FI and free access to a phone so we could use our phone cards to call the USA. You were central to everything we needed to visit as well.

It was difficult to find you on our own. I would suggest a "heads up" when you confirm a reservation so that the patron is aware that they will have to "look" for the hotel. The lift was out of order and for a 58 year old, I would have loved the lift.
