Excellent kitchen. Good accomodation. Not too much noise from parking place. Nicely in centre of town located

    Price on the high side

    "Very enjoyable."

Lovely location and easy to get to. Nice to be able to sit in the lounge easy chairs whilst waiting for dinner to be prepared

Having a room above the rear entrance caused sleep to be disrupted due to smokers talking and the night porter using the intercom to ask guests where they were calling from.

The satff and ambience were excellent.

Our room was pleasant but dingy - very poor amount of daylight. The cold tap only ran at a drizzle, and there was a sound of running water from a pipe all night long. The outside wall had damp stains.

Quaint, oldy worldy main building with all mod cons set in the heart of the village

    A bit pricey

Thought the staff were lovely. Partic the lady who brought us an ironing board, who was generally extremely pleasant and good fun! A tourist attraction on her own!

There were none - altho I never really understand giving shampoo but not conditioner.

"The staff really tried to be helpful but there are issues here which need to be looked into by the management"

oN THE WHOLE THE STAFF WERE HELPFUL. Traditional beer was in superb condition

We were in Room 42, which we couldnot find initially because it wasin a corridor marked 20-28. one bar meal - wild mushroom risotto was a minute portion. I was told this was all that was left. The restaurant manager did apologise and refund the money. I could not get to sleep because there was a constant hum in the room. I believe this came from the boiler room below us as it went off at 11.15 and recommenced at 5.45. The TV remote did not work. Our room sccount was left OUTSIDE the room in the corridor and on hte reverse was a Newspaper Porters list. Our final account included VAt but did not show a VAT number anywhere. On the back of thiswas a list of residents, room numbers and meal requirements. I mentioned this to the receptionist who said you were trying to save paper. Very admirable but there is such a thing as Data protection

"The location is great but I wouldn't return to the Star Inn I would go to one of the other hotels or B&B in the village. "

    Good location

poor room for price, breakfast not great, bar was terrible with appalling service

"Could have been staying in a Travel Lodge by the look of the bedroom. It was not as good as it could have been and felt rather dated. THe staff were very pleasant however."

Bed was comfortable, so were pillows

Breakfast could have been better i.e more choice Room was very basic considering the cost. The bathroom ceiling had peeling paint on it. Toiletries were basic. No chocolates in room as advertised.

"Was good to be able to leave our car in the car park after checking out. Staff friendly and helpful. Shame that the bar had shut early 10.30 due to no customers on a Friday night! but the night porter did get us some drinks that we had in the lounge. Online booking said it accepted Amex, it doesn't. Overall a very good stay."

Very nice room and ensuite, good breakfast in the morning.

"We thought all of the staff were very friendly, efficient and worked well together. One of the general them spent time recommending and directing us to a lovely riverside walk. When the electric kettle in our room stopped working a brand new replacement was brought up to us within five minutes offering us her sincere apologies. We were pleased that this very old pub has retained it's character and remains unspoilt. The bedrooms which are separated from the main building are modern and work well. We only had breakfast there, but it was cooked well and carefully presented. The good sized car park is secure and a definite bonus."

The comfortable, quiet and clean room. The friendly staff who were keen to please and related well to us.

The room was on the small side.

We liked our room very much it was clean, comfortable and quietbut were a bit surprised to find only four tv channels what happened to Channel 5?and the tv is a bit small for older eyes! That was our only not quite a complaint more a comment and we would definitely return."

"A smart combination of genuine old, major refurbishment and brand new accommodation around a large parking space, not visited. Dinner and breakfast were good, with a reasonable choice. The hotel staff were solicitous and gave every help when asked. We found The Star pleasant and interesting, centrally situated in a picturesque village. It is appropriately classified as a good middle-range hotel. The price seems to be in line with others in this polular up-market location."

pleasant fully-renovated room in the old part of the hotel

"The Hotel is very attractive, historic and comfortable. A good, pleasant restaurant with a good menu. Ample car parking facilities were appreciated."

The Hotel is generally comfortable and friendly and we enjoyed staying in such an historic Inn. We were pleased that our bedroom was generously proportioned with room for two armchairs and a table. We have experienced some extremely small bedrooms at other accommodation in the past.

We were unable to open the window of our en-suite bathroom, it appeared that the sash was broken, although there was a ventilator fan. We didn't comment on this to the hotel about this as we were only on a 3-night break.

"It was a nice location and the staff did well, but overall the place relied on the location and history of the hotel to bump up prices. A discount should have been allowed for the inconvenience of the refurb temporary office in the restaurant!"

The location and atmosphere, friendly staff, nice food, clean.

It was undergoing renovation work at Christmas, it was too hot, it was expensive for what you got, relying on location and history. Your website said the hotel accepted Amex, which it does not. Bath water was dirty at first.

"we wanted a quiet overnight stay in atmospheric surroundings, - the Star delivered perfectly, although we did feel a bit rushed to eat breakfast and check-out on Sunday morning. There was a rugby world cup game on Saturday evening, other pubs had large screens, but the Star didn't - which was extremely appreciated by someone who derives no pleasure at all from watching sports, in fact, had it been impossible to escape from the rugby, the stay would have been much less pleasant."

quaint, intimate, atmospheric, no loud music in the bar, excellent food and beer.

unfriendly staff at check-in perhaps more business-like than infriendly, but we didn't feel particularly welcomed short breakfast hours 8 - 10am - would have been much nicer to have been able to have a lie in considering we were away to relax after a particularly busy and stressful period. Similarly, early check-out time 11am meant there was little time to enjoy the surroundings on Sunday morning.

"Good Hotel full of character but with a rather tired feel. Felt I'd been overcharged considering the state of the bathroom. I was unaware of the modern rear extension to the building and would have been further disappointed if we'd been put in one of these."

Olde world feel/charcter, good breakfast, not too many customers, lots of public spaces. Good parking.

The bathroom smelt of drains. Olde world dust & cobwebs.

"Very helpful staff. We could only get a twin room online but when we arrived the friendly receptionist upgraded us to one of the original rooms of the hotel, which was very nice indeed. The room was comfortable, cosy and quiet. Hot water wasn't that hot but there was a notice to tell you that it took a while to get hot in that part of the hotel. We didn't try the restaurant as it looked a bit dated and was mostly populated by OAP's but the breakfast the following day was very nice, though the waiting staff were not exactly dynamic! A nice place to stay and very well situated."

"The Star is a great place. It is conveniently located and as a base for walking in and around the Downs it would be perfect."

The Star Inn is a very attractive oak beamed pub/restaurant/hotel. I got a very welcome arrival especially as I was cold, wet and thirsty after walking from Eastbourne. The room was beautiful and the bed large and comfortable.

Only a couple of minor irritations. Like almost all hotels I've stayed in they never give you enough coffee, milk and sugar! For the price of a few sachets etc it seems a bit counter productive. Also the plumbing seemed a bit temperamental as I couldn't get any water out of the tap at first but eventually got it going.

"For the money I would have expected more - the room was small, the bed uncomfortable and things like light fittings and picture tops clearly had not been dusted in a long time. Lounge furniture very tatty. Food was only so-so for the price - my scrambled eggs at breakfast were cooked dry - and the one evening meal we ate there was over-priced for what was really quite a plain meal. Only a few staff dashing around clearly struggling to cope at busy times and the lounge area often had old dishes sitting for a while before being cleared."

Traditional inn in a nice village.

Dusty - cobwebs on the light fittings, uncomfortable bed and a feeling of not enough staff having to run around to keep up.

"We very much enjoyed our night in Alfriston. The booking process was easy, and the hotel was pleasant. The rooms were nice, with a welcoming bowl of fruit and local mineral water. We had a reasonable meal in the bar though non-residents can not eat there after 7! and a good breakfast. All in all a very pleasant stay in a lovely village."

Pleasant room in friendly hotel, set in a lovely village. Good food, friendly service.

Price was a little high for bed and breakfast, breakfast service was a little poor.

"Comfortable stay and very good food - 1 x dinner, 2 x breakfast. Efficient and friendly service. Please equip your rooms as many hotels do with shoe shine cloths - I had to search out the local shop to buy polish. Didn't worry me but suspect that many guests would question lack of hairdryers - although iron and ironing boards provided !!"

    Good sized room; comfortable bed

Bathroom decor the worse for wear - especially bath panel. TV very limited - only BBC1 and 2 and one ITV channel

  • 70% Older Couple

from Hastings United Kingdom;UK, stayed on August 25, 2006

"This very attractive old hotel in a lovely setting. Unfortunately this ancient inn suffers from a lack of finesse and imagination as far as its management is concerned. For example there were no flowers anywhere. Just a vase on the breakfast buffet table and a little sprig on each table would have been so much better. One cup at breakfast was dirty and had to be changed and we had to clean smears off the cutlery. Surely the job of staff to check these things. Dinner at night was very average and why were certain very mundane items on the menu charged extra as a supplement? These items were most certainly nothing special! What a pity. A little imagination and the whole place could be transformed from just OK to great. Geoff Collins"

wonderful old building in an attractive village

    1. Lack of attention to detail 2. Although room was a free upgrade to one of the original old rooms it was above the bar and very noisy until after 11.30pm. Meal was disappointing and I objected to paying a meal supplement for what was a very average meal off the menu.

    Functional and clean

Nothing - it was entirely adequate for a short stay. I should add that the Breakfast was first class
