"Enjoyed the stay, good location in centre, busy street so could see that the rooms overlooking the street could be noisy but we didn't have that problem. Contempary room spoilt by filthy white carpet. Real coffee sachets and a cafetiere plus tea bags and chocolate drinks. Safe deposit in room. Reception slighty grubby, could be cleaner and tidier laundry waiting for collection at side of receptionist, papers scattered about, tables could do with a polish. But we did enjoy it!"

Liked the contempary furniture and great bathroom. The room was also facing internally away from the noisy street, so had a quite night. Room quite small but more than adequate for an overnight stay

Filthy carpets - whoever decided to put white carpets in a hotel bedroom?! The room also smelt 'unclean', may have been the cushions filling or maybe not. Room charge was £69 but we were nearly charged £75+ because we had been put down as having Dinner although we had not eaten at the hotel. Receptionist slightly 'cool'over this but not our fault, is there some i.d. needed, given, and verified when guests charge to the room? Obviously someone had charged to our room but we had no way of giving proof that we had/had not eaten there but she waived it anyway so it didn't come to a problem.

"good location, value for money and nice room. "

really nice room, only paid £59 for one night so great value. excellent location beside central station and all the shops and bars

arrived at hotel at 11am left luggage and told reception our name. was told check in time 2.30pm. however came back to hotel at 3.15pm and had to wait a further one hour before a room was ready. feel we should have been allocated first ready room as they knew we were waiting.

"good hotel, convenient and would recommned to a friend / stay again!"

excellent location and freindly staff. modern rooms with lovely bathroom. Although on a main road it wasn't too noisy at all like other reviewers had mentioned.

11am check-out is a little early for a weekend, only 1 set of towels in the room for 2 people and a comfier bed would have been a real winner for me.

"Poor - I would not stay here again and found it a rip off."

The room was so poor I had to ask to change rooms and was offered an upgrade. The upgrade room was still shabby but at least better.

The room was shabby and poor, with chipped fixtures and fittings and a heavily stained carpet. I would not recommend the hotel, which was extremely expensive for the quality. I would stay in a premier inn as a preferance - cheaper and cleaner!

"Hotel in a great location for city centre / train station / bars and clubs. Room overlooked main road, but was quiet even when clubs were in full swing! Room could have been slightly bigger."

Clean room with good quality bedding / furniture etc. Nice touches with fresh coffee, good quality complimentary bathroom goods. Comfortable King Sized bed, quiet room

Room was very small, could just about get round bed. Very strict 3pm check in - room was only just about ready at 3.25pm when I came back from a walk around town

"nice hotel but not as special as we expected we will stick 'de vere' in future"

polite friendly staff, lovely decor, great looking bar area, bathroom was nice lovely big bed with quality bed linen was the best part of our stay.

we were disapointed to not be able to check in at 2 when we arrived as we specifically mentioned the time we would arrive and had been told by email that our requests would be met as we were unable to check into our room when we arrived so we went down to the bar, however we were told that the coffee machine wasn't working and although the bartender could get us 2 coffees, he would have to go next door to the living room to get them so we might as well go next door. although politely suggested i felt this was quite unprofessional and it was made clear that he didnt wnat to have to go anywhere to get them. we had just arrived having walked round from the station in heavy rain and wanted to have a drink and dry off a little, we didnt appreciate being sent next door. as a result when we ate in the living room with friends that evening we chose to pay there and then rather than charge the bill to the room, which i assume would have netted the hotel a small income. the carpet in our room number 4 i think had numerous stains on the carpet which was quite unpleasant.

"Overall an enjoyable stay. We had to use the public car park in Dean Street which involved a climb up a steep bank to reach the hotel entrance."

    The location.

The lack of hotel car parking facilities & the carpet in the room was heavily stained.

"The location is brilliant and with a bit of attention to detail it could be really good. I spoke to the manager before I left"

Well appointed, clean, tidy, bright and shiny, good dinner cooking

A bit, more attention to detail required eg room service a bit disorganised, too many items on breakfast menu 'off'

"This hotel suited me fine for an efficient overnight stop but I would not recommend it for a holiday braek."

It worked. Perfect situation near station. Had all I needed.

Stained carpet. Room could do with upgrade. Noisy room. Heating control did not seem to be working.

The bathroom was immaculate, the bed was the softest ever and the sheets..... climbing into bed was heaven.

Didn't state whether the bottled water in the room was free or chargeable. The hotel did not have private parking.

A very convenient central location with helpful staff. Obviously favoured by the stars - we saw two British Olympic ice-skating legends at breakfast!

Slight distrubance from traffic noise in the evenings when settling down.

"I had a very, very bad night's sleep here. The worst I have ever had in a hotel. I got to sleep at 2am. My room room 11 was directly about the Hotel's bar called the Living Room. There was music from the time of my arrival at 8pm until well after midnight. It was loud enough to hear what the songs were. I put ear plugs in and could still hear a thudding bass beat. There was also a strong smell of fresh cigarette smoke, also, I assume form the bar. I phoned up reception at 11pm to ask when the noise was going to stop. The receptionist did not seem at all concerned that I was in a room which was so noisy I couldn't sleep at 11pm. He said he would ask them to turn the music down. There was no reduction in the volume. The music stopped at about 00:45, but there was the sound of tables and chairs being dragged around. Some music started up again at about 1am. I phoned up reception again. The guy on reception said he would send the porter to see where it was coming from. It carried on. I got up and went for a walk to see if I could find where the noise was coming from - the only place seemed to be the bar still - the rooms adjacent to mine were quiet though other people were up. I was eventually exhausted enough to fall asleep around 2. I am sure there are rooms that don't suffer from this problem, but room 11 was for me intolerable, and I am not a light sleeper - I live in central London and can cope with noise. I was as concerned at the indifference of staff to my concerns. I wouldn't stay here again."

    Clean, smart, modern, simple.

    Noisy.

"Nice hotel, friendly staff but price tag a little too high, particularly for such a small room. If breakfast had been included in the room price it would have seemed better value."

The cafetiere & real coffee, smart bathroom, friendly check-in staff. Excellent freshly cooked breakfast, but a little slow.

The room was small, only just big enough for a double bed. No view frosted window - not good. Noisy air con unit outside.

"Very nice boutique hotel located in a renovated old building with a pleasant atmosphere on the famous Grey Street in downtown Newcastle. Not more than 3 minutes from everything. One of the best hotels in town, and good value for your money. My first stay was all over a very pleasant experience, with a few minor exceptions: The breakfast - which is not included in the room price - offered few alternatives for those who prefer low carbohydrate and/or low cholesterol diets. The breakfast staff could not accommodate to my dietary requirements as a type II diabetic, not even after four days. When I checked in I was first sent to a room that had not been cleaned. There were soiled garments belonging to previous guest lying around, and a foul stench and a quite unpleasant mess in the bathroom. Although I was quickly moved to another room, I must say this first impression made me feel a bit disenchanted about the place. However, on the basis of my overall positive impression of the place, I will be willing to give them a second chance, and I hope my next stay at Grey Street Hotel will be perfect enough to remove this flawed recollection permanently from my memory."

Polite staff and nice, well equipped rooms. Above average standard in this price range.

Some professional glitches in the service routines caused a somewhat negative first impression...

The location is excellent and the room was attractively presented. The TV and DVD set up was good

Uncomfortable beds - pushing 2 singles together doesn't make 1 double! Parking - no chance of a lie in as you have to be out feeding the meter at 9.30

"The hotel is excellent and would come highly recommended to anyone thinking about visiting newcastle. The location is perfect, with road and rail access as close as could be. Sound insulation was better then expected - I didn't hear anything from outside the room! My only small gripe would be that the hotel is set in an old building, which means that the floor layout is confusing, and the coridoors are narrower than usual - this only matters when you are trying to get to checkout carrying two peoples luggage while hungover!!!"

    Good staff and facilities

    small access/coridoors to some rooms
