"This hotel is run down, even the check out clerk admitted this, after I mention our window. This hotel is not worth it's current rating."

    Concierge was excellent.

Room not clean. Asked at check in, what paper I would like. I thought it was comlementary. It was not. I was not told, at check-in or check-out, that a charge would be made for use of credit card. Luckily I reread your booking form and I avoided charge. The window handle in our room was loose and whistled all night. There was no local area information in the room. The hotel info was all but non existentit said there was a bar, but gave no indication where it was! and the room service menu consisted of 11 loose photocopied sheets, just left lying on the bed.

friendly staff at reception when booking in and out

slow service in bar area for lunch, staff were pleasant, but no charm, for evening meal very slow service, and most of the staff had a job smiling, apart from 2, but were polite

"The hotel had no trace of the online booking via your company.Service at breakfast and in the bar in the evening was poor. Room service needed to be called repeatedly before items were received"

Spa and spa staff Variety of breakfast choices

Service. Check out. Huge queue-35/40 mins. Card swiped for £180 as security on check in- hotel wanted to charge entire bill not just the outstanding balance on check out

"The hotel did not 'present well' overall as the experience was adversely impacted by the room problems."

Good location, good evening meal, good breakfast

Bed in room was uncomfortable for both of us. The room had no air conditioning and we had to sleep with the window open and the fan in the room on in October!to be at a reasonable temperature. The fan was very dusty.

    "Lovely !"

Excellent, friendly staff and facilites, breakfast was superb !!

Rooms were very hot and stuffy during the night, and a bit noisy with windows open, but it was an unusually hot day for Southampton!!.

    "An entirely pleasant experience!"

Size of room; style and quality of furnishings, excellent breakfast, nice staff; was able to benefit from a very good internet rate

Personally would have preferred smoking room; pillows a little stiff; flip-flops for use of swimming pool would have been nice

"Extremely dissappointing and very likely to put me off staying De Vere accommodtion in the future."

The Hotel has an impressive frontage and I paid a relatively low price as I obtained a saver deal via the internet.

Room had no air conditioning which I believe is extremely poor for a 5* hotel. In light of the above there were no fans provided. The main window of the room had to be left open to allow air flow albeit particularly poor; not that this mattered as it was broken in any case. The TV had no remote in the room and on phoning reception it took around 30 minutes to provide one. The bathroom had mould on the tiles and skirting boards. There was very little information on the hotel, its amenities or that of the surrounding area. The general quality of the room and its furnishings was poor. I don't believe it is appropriate to stand in a queue for breakfast only to findi it is a buffett; particularly as there were a significant number of tables not in use. I found the majority of staff to be surly and disinterested.

"Very enjoyable stay but compared to other hotels of similar quality I feel the cost is about 20% higher when factoring in having to pay to park as well"

Good location, restaurant and food good. Friendly and efficent staff.

No air conditioning in room so was very hot and stuffy. Pedestal fan provided but too noisy to use and sleep at the same time. Leaving the balcony door open introduced lots of traffic noise. Consequently we both had a poor nights rest. Car park not secure and can't see what benefit one gets for the £5 parking charge.

"I felt that it was good value for money - but felt that it was more of a 4 star than a 5 star"

    Room and staff great

Swimming pool and Jacuzzi was very disapointing they were both freezing and the actual poolside area was so cold that you could sit by it. We could not order still water, or Rose wine which is my favourite. We also had items added to our bill - but were subsequently taken off.

"For the price paid, I would have expected better service and room in better condition."

Quick attentitve service from the staff at breakfast

Room not properly cleaned, broken equipement within room. General layout of room and style seemed dated. Hotel in general needs more attention to detail with respect to cleanleness. Reception staff only giving room information at check in no additional information regarding facilities and times of resturant/bar etc.

"Apart from the Meal - Satisfactory, I have stayed in De Vere Hotels before and always found them to be outstanding, The restaurant at the Grand Harbour let the whole hotel down"

Room Clean although did look at little worn

Meal was extremely dissappointing - My daughters 'Chicken dish' was practically inedible unless you had iron teeth, My wifes meals was also very dissappointing 4 - 5 star hotel, with a minus5 star restaurant. I very rarely comment on hotel stays, as I am not normally one to complain, but I now regret not asking for compensation.

the overall look of the hotel was outstanding, but on entrance it was taken away by the bad management of the check in desk, was stood for over 10 minutes while staff dithered over some problem

bad points were,we stayed in a room with no air conditioning apart from a fan in the corner of the room which when trying too sleep was made almost impossible,if you turned the fan off with 2 people in the room it became hot and unbearable within 20 mins,at over

"Our only moan was that the spa was broken, however we did apprectiate that these things do happen."

The grand appearance of the hotel was very nice, lovely reception area and restuarants and the location was excellent.

The attention to detail in our room was not up to the expected standard, I expected a hotel of that star rating would have everthing just perfect.

"We were not particularly impressed with our stay. The service in the restaurant in the evening was ok but our drinks were taken from the table when we ordered new ones, even though we still had drink left in our glass! The location and breakfast were good but we would not hurry back"

We were not told times for breakfast or dinner facilities, yet when we came down to reception later on, other guests were being informed of this. The view from our room, 123, was not very scenic to say the least. We were not sure if all of the rooms catered for disabled guests but ours was definitely arranged for someone who was disabled which was not our request.

That there was every facility required

A really small point, the bottle bank from the bar could be heard being filled late at night.

"There was more space in our room than in comparable-priced rooms in other hotels we've stayed in. Service of the hotel staff was very good. Unfortunately the large atrium public seating area was roped off for a private function the evening we were there, which limited space downstairs to relax and have a drink. We liked the fact we were allocated a table for breakfast, rather than just joining a scrum as we have had to in other hotels. Would have preferred filter coffee to instant in our room. Visitorwise a very enjoyable stay."

Room was spacious Seated at table for breakfast buffet

Instant coffee in room - would have preferred filter coffee

    very nice decor

    cold in lobby/bar area

from Uckfield UK, stayed on November 2, 2007

"A very pleasant 5* 2 rosette hotel let down in that instance by lack of aircon, much unwanted noise at night and incidents of poor service. The rear of the hotel faces a neighbouring leisure centre, and the function room appears to be at the rear. The hotel front faces an urban dual carriageway, busy at peak times on weekdays. Good facilities, within walking distance of shops inc John Lewis, free hotel parking, free internet access by 100mbps ethernet cable - make sure the router is plugged in and powered to work. A second visit on business a few days later was better including an unexpected upgrade to the front. Better."

A spacious traditional room at 4th floor

The bed had no support in the middle - replace mattress. The room was too hot even thought the radiator was off, and the window was partially open. The window was locked open but not secure and was without a key to close it at night - essential because of the noise from clearing up from functions or adjoining premises. Bins being moved, crashing of bottles, tanoys and warning bleeping from 3.30 am onwards. So about 3-4 hours sleep. The window being key locked open required room service to unlock, but it presented a Health and Safety hazard because there was no window stay/restrictor. Service at breakfast was not impressive - order not taken for ages for tea or coffee and had to find a member of staff, and then the another 20 mins wait for it to arrive.

    Cleanliness and excellent service standards

Internet connection through Ibahn did NOT work despite eight attempts. Need to get WIFI in all rooms asap, please. Using ethernet is just such a nuisance and is prone to difficulties.

"Everything was fine except the restaurant! Ate there only once, partly because there was no daily change of menu, but mainly because there was nothing on the menu which wasn't dressed up in a fancy way. I know chefs like to impress with their modern skills, but isn't it possible to have a few simpler British dishes?"

View was the back of the hotel. Would have preferred a view from the front, but online this was not mentioned
