"A great city and a great hotel."

The Scotsman has the best staff of all the hotels we've stayed in. They were knowledable, friendly and even knew who we were after a day's stay.

"Nice room but too noisy to get much sleep"

room and hotel were very well appointed and the staff were excellent which I would expect considering the cost

The room was facing the railway station and the noise from the street/nightclub was terrible. Our room was also close to the kitchen and the staff door was in use throughout the night.I am not normally bothered by this sort of thing and I realise that this is a city centre hotel but it was a long night!

"An excellent hotel was spoiled by the heat of the rooms and, in our opinion, the inability of the night time concierge to respond appropriately to an important health matter. The day time concierges were excellent, in particular the assistant head concierge, Gavin Stirling, who was the best we have met to date."

Very interesting building which was well situated for viewing the centre of Edinburgh.

The building was far too hot for comfort even though the weather was cool. The only way to cool the room was to open the window. This meant being disturbed through the night by traffic noise and drunken revellers.

"Very handy to reach from the train station and it is a great hotel. Breakfast was a huge letdown - pricey and not fit for consumption."

Concierge staff were great. Room a good size.

Steam room was out of operation last time, the jacuzzi was out of operation. Breakfast in the room was awful - the food was so bad we could not eat it. Upon checking in, the girl thought that we had not stayed before when infact we had stayed many times - not very personal.

    The view from the window

It was cold the heating did not work and there was a constant noise of rattling windows, creaking floor boards and doors.

"The room was nice and large, despite being a smoking room did not smell too bad. The bed was a bit too soft and a twin but I booked online in a hurry at a great rate so can't really fault it. Concierge helped me to try and find a meal at a local veggie restaurant but in the end went for room service which was quick and nice."

Bathroom, audio visual setup, tea coffee facilities

Smoking room, a bit noisy location, twin beds too soft.

"The hotel was overall impressive and in an excellent location. However, our visit did not get off to the best of starts when the receptionist advised she only had a record of a booking for one night, not the two we were staying for. These bookings were made separately. There was not a problem as the receptionist had advised that the hotel had accommodation for both nights, but having got the impression that the hotel was not busy, we were disappointed that our room did not have a better panorama. The curtains were difficult to open or close, and the eregonomics of the TV, tea/coffee facilities we found lacking. The satellite TV picture was poor, and the TV refused to function on our last morning. The staff were pleasant and courteous, but gave the impression of being perhaps a bit gormless. Sorry if this sounds like a bit of a rant. As I said at the start of this s ection, overall we found the hotel to be very good."

The bed was particularly comfortable and the bathroom was laid out very well with excellent fixtures and fittings.

The layout of the particular room was not the most ergonomic. If the cupboard doors were ope in order to watch the TV, you had to walk round them to get from one side of the bed to the bathroom. Also, we found the tea/coffee facility a trifle awkward to operate.

The room was beautiful, the location was ideal, and the health spa was lovely. The staff were attantive but not intrusive. Would strongly reccomend this hotel to anyone."

    The room was exceptional.

"Overall enjoyed the stay, locality of the hotel was very convenient and was as advertised. Rooms were clean, staff very helpful, polite and welcoming. Food in the restaurant was good. Wish I'd made more of the leisure facilities pool, gym, sauna etc,. Would definitely stay there again."

Friendly, courteous staff, well equipped rooms, good services offered in the hotel, excellent location for main attractions

No parking on-site, party bus outside window blaring dance music until early hours, our room was more or less adjacent to the bridge window didn't shut completely so late night revellers heard until 3-4 am, personally mattress too soft all in all didn't sleep too well.

"The hotel is situated in an ideal location and is very nice. Due to the heatwave it was necesssary to keep the windows open throughout the entire night. The loud outside noise level did not cease until after 3:00am making it difficult to get to sleep. I would recommend this hotel except in warm weather situations which require open windows for comfort."

    Very helpful and courteous staff

"I have stayed at the Scotsman twice now, both times for business. A 5* hotel is never cheap in Edinburgh but this one is reasonable and I would actually happily spend my own money there when I stay for leisure. Only small gripe:The bistro is good but the bar area is small, and on a busy night noisy, and the range of Malts this is Edinburgh for God's sake a bit limited."

Good sized, comfortable rooms with all the features a business traveller looks for including broadband internet access.Convenient location being right next to Waverly station no, the trains do not disturb you

Somewhat quirky layout of the hotel may not suit all. Having been the former newspaper offices the place is like a rabbit warren but it does add character!

"I would not stay in the Scotsman again because of all the problems detailed above. I made a written list of the issues and was provided one night free, which I considered fair. Although the building itself was very old and therefore provided good ambience, there was an obvious inattention to detail."

    Location

Many things: room was hot, electric outlet in bathroom did not work, windows were inoperable, no hot water second morning, restaurant/bar WAY too expensive, room not laid out well, lift to exercise area not working, TV/audio system very difficult to use.

"Overall, it was a lovely experience with a gorgeous room, view, etc."

We stayed in the Editor's Suite, which was lovely.

There was only one option for breakfast really when we tried to order breakfast in bed. We were late for breakfast so everything was put away when we went downstairs, luckily there were some muffins left. We also wanted to get messages from the hotel and everything was booked so that was a bit dissappointing. It was a Monday morning and we were expecting there to be no problem making an appointment at that time.

"A thoroughly enjoyable experience, although staff at reception clearly told us that breakfast was served until 11am on Bank Holiday Monday. Upon arrival at breakfast at 10.30, we were told this was NOT the case, and we could only have the buffet, which staff kept trying to remove before we had finished. This was somewhat irritating."

Staff obviously came from all over the world . ie poland, australia etc. this was no problem however I would question the loyalty and therefore trust of these staff due to there length of time at the hotel. Overall everything was good and the staff who did look after us were nothing short of excellent."

    Peace and quiet
