"Apart from the above it was fine and I would stay again "
Nice room, nice grounds, good food, welcoming
after the first night I reported that the radiator would not turn off and that I did not get the early morning call I requested. It was so hot that I had to leave the window wide open and was wakened by the dawn chorus On my return nothing had been done about either and the next morning it was fortunate that I was awake because the volume level of the phone had been turned down - hence no early morning call the previous day. Something that could perhaps should have been checked after I reported it. Instead I felt that I had been ignored

"The hotel gave a very friendly welcome despite my arriving in the middle of a wedding. The hotel has character although most bedrooms appear to be built in a newer extension. The room was rather small but the bathroom had been updated. Some of the public areas will need refurbishmnet soon, particularly the carpet on the main stairs which is well worn. There could be more variety at breakfast."
Friendly welcome and character of the public areas of the hotel. The hotel did not push guests out of the dining room because of the wedding as happens in some other hotels.

It had everything that anyone could need.
The only thing that was not up to standard was the Television very old!

"the staff in hotel were excellant. when we were unable to get a taxi to get a train one of the hotel staff took us himself. we could not fault anything. we were there for a wedding, which seemed to be organised brilliantly."
general accommodation was excellant

"This hotel is an old building with a 1980's ? extension to one side. The old building is fantastic - the new'ish part is ok. I have stayed in this hotel several times and have never had a bad experience. Sure there are bits that could be modernised and it's looking a little tired in places but faced with endless bland hotels I'd pick this hotel everytime. The gardens around the hotel are excellent for a stroll. When I have had a request or a problem the staff are always helpful and nothing is too much trouble."
First rate room, friendly helpful staff, hotel with bags of character

"Unfortunately the lack of internet connectivity means I couldn't stay at this hotel in the future, working in the IT business sector means that this is an essential requirement. However for a break away from it all I would recommend a short stay this hotel. Although I would recommend that you see your room before booking in just to assure yourself of the size. The staff were excellent and make up for the buildings shortcomings."
Staff were friendly, courteous, and helpful. Food was above average with reasonable prices. Fantastic old building with bags of character.
Room was small, overall the decoration particularly in the corridors and reception area looks tired and needs updating a lick of paint would help. No internet connectivity - which for a hotel in 2007 is a little embarrassing.

"The hotel should really use a better photograph on the website, it looks much bigger and better when you get there compared to the pic on the website!"
Location, size of room
Only one set of towels in room.

"If you need your mobile phone during your stay then make sure you stay during the summer because you have to go outside to get a signal. Visitorwise excellent, staff very friendly, beautiful grounds, traditional decor."
Beautiful grounds and traditional style
No mobile phone signal throughout hotel which makes business difficult

"I probably did not read the small print but did not realise that breakfast was not included, I was surprised how pleasant and comfy the room was as it was more like a double room than a single and I felt very relaxed and welcomed by staff after a rather stressful drive."
the comfortable room which was very clean and tea making facilities

"Very friendly staff with efficient and helpful service both at the wedding anniversary reception being attended and at other times. After the reception meal midday, which was excellent, it was heplful to be able to have a bar snack, despite it being a Sunday evening when the hotel was busy. Wonderful gardens."
Clean, well decorated, outlook on to gardens.
Slightly cramped end of bed near to wall; noise from kitchen area late evening and early morning.

"Wonderful venue for weddings, and receptions. Food and service was exquisite. Checking in and out was effortless-as it should be. Would stay there again. Comes highly recommended."
It was clean, friendly, accomodating, beautiful grounds and surroundings.
Drink prices were a little on the pricey side.

"Good hotel with excellent history steeped in the location. However the staff let the hotel down and because we were not part of the wedding which was going on in the hotel, we felt brushed aside. On one occasion when collecting our keys from reception we could not get to the counter as they were serving out soup from the counter. A good hotel that could be run better."
Central, quiet and different.
Too antiquanted, staff performance was poor, very expensive in relation to what you recieve.

"A good hotel where I felt welcomed. The room that I had was in a more recently constructed part of the buildings and had no style though it was perfectly adequate."
Some better signs and lighting to help you get from the carpark to the reception. I had to do it at night and it wasn't easy

"I have stayed at this hotel many times in the past booking direct so knew what to expect. Its a great place to stay when the weather is good with a nice patio area. Like many of the older hotels its easy to get lost. No lift so travel light as there is no porter to carry luggage."
Nice old building but in excellent condition. Many of the old hotels look in need of restoration this one doesnt.
Restuarant Food is very good quality but Nuevo cuisine i.e. small portions large prices £31 for three courses. Have a look at the Bar menu better value and not so poncey.
from Yardley hastings United Kingdom;UK, stayed on June 10, 2005
helpful staff, but slow to answer bell in bar. Could improve on weeding outside front door particularly.

"We thoroughly enjoyed it..."
the staff were wonderfully helpful and attentive. Service was great. They really made us feel very welcome. It is nice to see a hotel that still offers to clean your shoes for free, offers newspapers, gives flowers to luncheon guests, etc. The floor manager went up and cleaned our room because they thought we were leaving, but we were staying on. Couldn't have been nicer.
There was no record of our reservation on arrival. Consequently, we got the last room, which was above the trash bins and noisy.
