Very nicely traditionally furnished tea room and library. Nice breakfast dinning room with a bright morning sunshine. Friendly staff.
The first impression of the room atmosphere especially the colours of bed linens, table clothes or a sofa looked a little dark especially the room was in the lower ground floor. Could use a bit brighter colours for Room 21.

Breakfast and staff in dining room
No lift is a major problem Less than friendly reception when we arrived from the airport after an overnight flight -- were told rather brusquely to come back at 2 pm. Had to ask if breakfast and a clean up was possible first

"Overall very good. I would therefore consider booking for myself/ in-laws again"
staff very pleasant and helpful. I actually booked stay for my elderly in-laws. Very pleased with service and excellent menu
minor problem where details of the pre-paid meal had not been reconciled with pre-paid room reservation. This had potential to cause concern for elderly couple. That said, it was quickly rectified with a telephone call to myself.

"Oh how depressing that was! It forcibly told me that a gentleman's club is emphatically not a hotel because guest tolerances are different. Place reeks of putting-off and making-do; my room was a classic example. The cooked breakfast was at best ordinary, except the sausage which had been cooked at 6.30 and kept hot. Never again!!!!"
Reception ok
Room No.1 seriously tired and sadly shabby-1960's furniture. Bathroom shelf half off the wall-if that's cleaned every day how come it's not fixed? Stink of frying in the little vestibule cupboard because the panelling is disengaged from the wall and lets fumes in. obliged to hang suit and coat in bathroom. No decaff coffee offered.Unable to locate remote for truly ancient TV.

"A very pleasant, comfortable and quiet stay, but I would not have the 'full' breakfast again."
Size and comfort of room, bed, bed linen
Quality of breakfast - the rolls NOT GOOD, the sausage TERRIBLE, but fruit salad great. Why let yourself down for the sake for a very few pennies - good ingredients make a meal - I just hope that you don't skimp in this way on your dinners!

Wonderful Room, lovely food and friendly staff.
Our double bed was two singles. Would have preferred one double. Also beds were too soft.

"Generally satisfied. Seemed quite expensive for standard of hotel."
Convenient location for our needs.Very pleasant and efficient service. Room comfortable.Excellent breakfast beautifully served.
Decor and furnishings a bit dated.Initial room offered was very small . Had to ask for an alternative. Lights fused on entering room and we had to wait till they were reset.

"The accommodation was of a very high standard, and the proximity to the train station 5 minute walk was also very useful, although the dinning room is very formal jacket and tie for evening meals.Overall a very pleasant stay."
The room was very spacious and the four poster bed was an added bonus.

High quality accomodation in a quiet but central part of Edinburgh

"The Hotel staff were very friendly, rooms were excellent, breakfast was very nice, and service was good. The only information we would have found useful before arriving would be recommendation of places to eat for evening meals, drinks etc."
Friendly staff very helpful, nice atmosphere, lovely rooms.

"Although they have accomadations, they are more of a city club. No parking. No bellhop for three flights of stairs. Not really set up for foreign travellers; ie help with directions, restaurants, etc. A great place to stay if you are visiting friends or are there for business."
Vey nice, all amenities updated. Clean. Quiet street. Nice bar, lounge, very clubby.

"Potential visitors should be warned that a number of rooms are in the basement. Ours was No 22 - to be avoided at all costs. The hotel apparently charges - or attempts to charge- the same rate as for other rooms. Having protested, we were given a 50% reduction on the room rate for the night we spent in the basement room. With this big proviso, the club provided a convenient base for a weekened visit, close to Princes Street but in a quiet spot. The staff were helpful, though we were not given any warning that we had been allocated a basement room on arrival."
We were inititally assigned a miserable basement room, airless and noisy. Following our protest we were given a better, but still rather small room, for the following two nights, and a partial refund.

"Overall, we had a good experience. the staff were warm and welcoming, the food was brilliant. However, when I'm on holiday, I do like a quiet room, and alas there was some noisy machinery running all night so I got very little sleep. Visitorwise, it couldn't be bettered."
It was warm and comfortable, and the facilities were user friendly, e.g. shower, television. food was marvellous
I'm sorry but it was really noisy!

"We got exactly what we expected and we would certainly stay here again. Breakfast was very good. Dinner was quite good but unexciting. The dining room was very quiet in the evening and we would probably prefer to go out for dinner and just use the hotel for bed and breakfast in future."
Comfortable and clean and in a convenient place.
Poor picture on television and lack of places to put things down in the bathroom. Also found the lighting a bit dim.

Very well located. Some history attached to the hotel. Good breakfast.
Room was adequate. No coffee/tea facility. Felt the bar was very quiet, lacked atmosphere, not cosy, perhaps too big, Feel it could be greatly improved. Also many stairs for elderly guests. Hotel looked a bit tired, needs a lick of paint. Reception area very cramped and old fashioned.

"Overall we give it a 10."
The old world style of the room and the spaciousness of the room. The food and bar were great. We want to come back. Thanks, for an excellent break from our trip in Ireland where we were visiting family and friends.

"Excellent value for money for a small and friendly city hotel"
The Hotel was in an excellentlocation. Everywhere was clean and well presented. The room was large for a City Hotel with lots of storage space.
By the nature of the establishment and we were well aware before we booked we did not eat at the Hotel because of their dress code. This was not an issue but from the breakfasts I susoect that Dinner would have been very good!

"Generally, we were quite happy with this accommodation. Its location was convenient, its rooms and club atmosphere suited an historic city like Edinburgh, and its tariff, when priced by the room instead of the individual, represented a good value. We were especially delighted with our large, elegant, double room."
Our double room transported us to an elegant, bygone era with its four poster, canopy bed, fireplace, triple mahogany armoire, and numerous matching pieces. With its updated bath and modern phone, our room was just the kind we had hoped to find in Edinburgh. We enjoyed the club's atmosphere as well and made a point of reading about the regiment's history and looking for it place of honor in the castle's War Memorial. If we could be assured of obtaining the same type of room again, we would look forward to a return visit to the club.
While the staff members were pleasant and always helpful, they were not all as familiar with their jobs as they might have been. Generally the breakfast and dinner food was good, but when it was not, replacements were quickly offered and delivered. However, because of time constraints, we just left our burnt toast and burnt pudding uneaten on our last morning having enjoyed the more carefully cooked eggs which we specifically had requested. Our adult son's twin room was clean and adequate but much smaller and not nearly as nice as our storybook double.

"This is a good quality hotel at a fair price for what you get considering we had free breakfast. The location was not as convenient as I thought as we were on a University visit and it was a long walk everywhere. If you are looking for a modern, buzzing hotel this is not it, however if you want a comfortable old-fashioned feeling hotel/gentlemans club with modern bathrooms and a gym big plus with my son come here. You could not do better for a short visit. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful."
Good room. Reasonable price with free breakfast in relatively central location
Sheets and blankets on the bed instead of duvets and unable to open the window much. A little like a maze in the hotel.

"An excellent hotel for a short city break, within easy walking distance of all main tourist sites. Room was luxurious we were given an upgrade as we stayed for 3 nights. The dress code for the dining room Monday to Thursday for dinner was strict - jacket and tie. Parking outside the hotel 8.30 - 18.30 was expensive 40p for 15 minutes and the multistorey "
Friendly staff, lovely spacious room, ideal situation for city centre
Parking was very expensive
