    "overall extremely enjoyable."

very pleasant staff, clean room, generally comfortable.

lack of biscuits on the tea tray, not enough tea/coffee/milk/sugar.

"Lovely grand hotel, just a shame about some of the staffs lack of customer service skills & the fact that we were placed in a room with no view! May be it was because we were a young couple instead of the usual older clientel? Their parking charge of £6 per night is also ridiculous!"

Very grand appearance & lovely traditional feel to everything. Hotel & rooms were clean.

Our room was right at the back of the hotel over looking the station so there was continous noise. Staff in the hotel bar were very distracted & lacked good customer service skills. The music in the bar was also being affected by the weather however there was no attempt by staff to find an alternative when complaints were made.

"Ok but will look around at other hotels for perhaps a little more comfort"

    Leisure facilities closeness to city

Room 105 whilst clean, spacious and comfortable was a little basic ie no fridge, lots of bare walls, custains not easy to close, curtain hanging off rail in alcove. Light bulbs too low to read. Main staircase rails very dusty

    "OK - just ok."

Proximity to town centre - efficient staff

Small car park, room not really four star quality

Friendly and courteous staff; great location; character building; Will stay there again!

No mini-fridge in room; window couldn't open fully so room was a bit hot until sometime after sunset

"Wouldn't bother staying again have stayed in better cheaper hotels. Only good point is the location as it is very close to the city centre."

breakfast was said to be included then they tried to charge us £13.95 each for it. The reception staff were very slow and didn't acknowledge us for at least 10mins.

"Have stayed in much more luxurious modern hotels at a fraction of the price."

Very good central location for shopping and 'leisure' in York....our room overlooked the hotel' grounds so very quiet and no train noise considering the stations' closeness.

Very small and fairly basic hotel room and basic bathroom facilities.

Room was really spacious & just what we were looking for, for a relaxing week-end away from the kids nice hot bath, sofa to relax on & a good telly & choice of films

Did think room was very pricey

"OK, ideal location but felt a bit over-priced, especially breakfast"

Beautiful building, lovely setting, spacious bathroom, most staff very friendly and helpful

Twin bedroom a bit cramped, leisure facilities a particular purpose in booking this hote not available on the date I travelled, one or two staff rather cool in their approach

  • 60% Individual on Business

from Inverness UK, stayed on February 16, 2009

Very poor breakfast and service, scrambled eggs and sausgaes were cold and not enough staff to help with tea and toast provision

  • 60% Individual on Business

The breakfast was good and the restaurtant staff helpful and efficient

I always use the gym in hotels where I stay. Several of the members of this gym are inconsiderate and selfish in that they completely ignore the "15 minute rule" on the aeorbic equipment. This is particularly frustrating in a small gym with only 4 treadmills. The staff should politely remind members of the rule and enforce it.

    "Disapponting"

Location we had been on a day trip to Edinburgh We were given a room in the old part of the hotel as requested

Centralised booking - lack of breakfast unclear - and had to ring separately to request location of room Loud boiler type noise all night Shower poor Sink drained slowly

    nice central hotel

"Very good, liked the hotel & position, staff very good"

Room was clean & well presented, the staff were very accomodating, breakfast was excellent, good location for central York

Room was small & too warm even with radiator turned off, towel rail extremely hot & dangerous, no heat control & you could catch the towel rail as we did, as the bathroom was small. Bar prices were expensive, £16 for three shorts

Lovely hotel central to all amenities. Nice large room.

Breakfast not included and was very expensive.

"Good, only if you were staying in the main hotel, bed was very small double and small room very large bathroom. "

Lovely position, lovely building and grounds.

Was put in the garden wing of hotel at first which is a real let down to the hotel itself, that feels more like a travel lodge. Asked to change rooms and they did change us.

We arrived at Check in to be told there was no room at the hotel and they had 'transferred' our booking to another, inferior hotel. We had already arranged a theatre visite and only arrived at the theatre when the curtain went up. The whole experience spoilt the weekend. WE WILL NOT BE BOOKING WITH ACTIVE HOTELS AGAIN

    "enjoyable"

Everything you would expect from a 4 star hotel

room was in the basement which meant no outdoor veiw but more important to us was that we were below the restaurant and had a noisy room

"The above bad point ruined the weekend otherwise perfect"

quality hotel and well positioned, good food and service.

They knew we had a young child and put us at the noisy end of hotel and so noise from outside until 4pm and child kept awake.

In the first room there was a leak in the ceiling from the bathromm above which dripped into my suitcase. From the look of the ceiling this had happened before and was not fixed I asked for another room which they gave me

    "Nice Hotel in splendid surroundings."

Beautiful Hotel, Good Location, Clean nice room

parking meter was broken and had to queue at reception. Check-in and check-out was slow because there was only one attendant and queue.

"We also had problems with the rate quoted online with booking.com. We were quoted "

We were reimbursed for the additional figure for breakfast after lack of the pool facilities see below.

The most disappointing thing for us was the lack of the leisure facilities, the only reason we booked this particular hotel was it had a pool however this was out of order due to boiler problems. We had the opportunity of two nights away without our two young children so the relaxing factor was everything to us. Understandably these things are unavoidable but the reason, and I belive the only justifiable reason, we paid such rates because of the on-site facilities.

Good/bad We asked for a double room and were told this couldn't be guaranteed. When we arrived we were booked into a twin. We rang reception and they changed the room for us immediately. A porter helped us to move. Room service was excellent.

"York was nice but I wouldn't stay at that hotel again. Totally unprofessional"

The hotel was nice and acceptable as a 4 star hotel. It was modern and clean.

The staff were very rude and unprofessional, the first room we were put in was tiny and smelt, and was on a busy main noisy road disgusting I have stayed in better two star hotel rooms for a quarter of the price. We were moved to a better room but only because I persisted that I wasn't going to stay in the room. You had to pay to park at hotel which was terrible and it was very expensive to eat and drink there.

"It was generally clean & comfortable but I wouldn't go back. There are better, cheaper places to stay in or near York."

Service in the Dining Room was dreadful and the meal was fairly average, especially considering the price of it. For a 4* hotel, the room was a bit small and remote. The breakfasts were good.

    "OK but won't recommend."

basic structure of hotel and decor was good.

Let down by the small details- lots of dirty glasses in the bar, filthy shoes of wiating staff in hotel, scruffy trousers with frayed hems held up with staples! Awful continental breakfast and cheap and nasty sausages. Appaling coffee and no pepper mill on the tables. Car park charges!

The location is good. Very nice old building.

Not well maintained throughout the hotel, only partly refurbished. The same goes for our room.

We were in the garden rooms and it was a long way to reception. You had to walk through a seminar at one point to get out.

"Terrible room, however good breakfast & very nice reception & dining area. If we had been staying more than one night we would have demanded to change rooms but 'put up with the room' as it was only for one night plus we were out all evening."

Excellent breakfast & very nice recpetion area & breakfast area.

We were staying in the new wing of the hotel which is terrible compared to the main part of the hotel which I have also stayed in before. Very disappointed with the rooms in the new wing.

"Overall really enjoyed stay at the hotel. All attractions we wanted to visit were within walking distance. Hotel clean and staff were friendly, would recommend to all age groups and will visit again."

Size of room and bathroom. Staff were friendly and professional. Breakfast was good and varied choice. Good view and lovely grounds. Close to Centre of York and condidering number of rooms, did not seem too busy.

The only 'bad' points if pushed were that the bathroom sink and shower both leaked water onto the floor. Light sleepers will be affected by noise from the train station nearby.
