"Had a great stay. Will recommend to others."
very friendly helpful and courteous staff.
Had to wait 20 mins for room key, due to the bar being busy, Another member of staff on duty in the evening would be an advantage.

Location, booking process, staff at hotel
Room was a bit dated and old fashioned and looked like it needed a proper clean.

"Excellent except the price"
Lovely and clean, excellent staff
Over priced at £87 per night, plus wanting to charge £8.95 each for breakfast ! There's a Wethrspoon pub 5 mins away that do breakfast at £2.99, no need to ask which we chose !

"We arrived early and it was no problem to leave the car while we went to the wedding. Our room was small but clean. Nothing special would have preferred a higher room. Ground floor view of the road not exactly stunning"
Plenty of parking, nice lounge area, hotel looks good from the outside
Creaking and old,too noisy with noisy plumbing, breakfast not included in hefty price. We wanted a drink in the bar but no one bothered to come through

"adequate."
Ideal location for event I was attending. Staff were friendly and efficient. Bathroom was spacious and good shower facilities.
Musty odour on entering room. General state of hotel in need of refurbishment. On arrival at reception asked for full payment for duration of stay.refused to give it.

"Parking bad."
Part of Hotel description from Active Hotels was "Free Parking", however this doesnt appear on the hotel website. The problem being there is very limited parking on the hotel site and I was advised to park in a public car park some 10 minutes walk away. Not what I wanted. Until I noticed that the on street parking allowed 1800-0800 and all day Sunday. As it was Saturday on our visit after 6pm, no problem. Still not what I expected from the Active Hotels description. Also Job to keep sash window open on a muggy night.

"Much better than my last visit in March this year rather tired and pokey single room and everything seems much cleaner and fresher than the first time we visited 2 1/2 years ago. The feel of the hotel is much more positive and with a good ambiance."
The new bathroom was extremely nice and the whole room was clean and well equipped. There were some nice local prints on the walls. The staff were attentive and helpful. Good breakfast with very decent coffee.
The vent axia in the bathroom was not working and in the bedroom there were two unused rawl plugs in one wall which spoiled the overall good look of the room. There was a pile of dirty towels in the corridor outside our room for at least 16 hours. The carpet at the threashold of the door leading off the balcony to the bedrooms needs to be secured as it could trip someone up.

"Good location, good staff, rooms comfortable.Hotel itself was typical period hotel with a great main hall !!! Handy for York Town Centre and transport links."
Staff friendly and efficient
Restaurant was very quiet, menu meant no choice. Ate in the bar cheaper, simpiler bar food. You may want re-think the option in the restaurant.

Ideal situation for city centre and the staff were very helpful and accomodating to our needs.

"I think the adage 'you get what you pay for' is appropriate in this case. The room was ok - quite noisey at night from people arriving late after a night out, but ok. Was very concerned about the hotel not having a record of me booking; for that reason alone I wouldn't stay there again."
Room was fine, if a little shabby and in need of rennovation. Staff pleasant at check-in, if a little clueless...
There was no record of me having made a reservation through your website, even though I had received confirmation from yourselves and had luckily printed out to take along and I had not been booked in. Thankfully, there was still a room available, as at 37 weeks pregnant I wouldn't have been impressed if I had to go elsewhere!

the service was just very poor
from Halifax UK, stayed on April 27, 2009
"The public parts of the hotel were quite good, however as stated, the standard of our room was poor. The proximity of the hotel to York centre and free parking, together with four days of excellent weather were a plus."
Hotel well positioned for city. Free parking a bonus.
Maintenance poor. Room had mould on ceiling & wwas desperately decoration.Equipment poor - kettle falling and handset dropping to bits.

"Our stay was badly disturbed by the violence in the room next door and the fact that it was necessary for us to shelter a young lady who seemed to be under attack whilst the hotel staff contacted the police. That should not detract from the excellent service that the hotel provided, and the professional and courteous manner of the staff in dealing with an objectionable guest."
In all, the hotel was very good and perfectly enjoyable.

"Very good price for 3 nights, fairly close to York city centre, bit of a walk. Room warm and comfortable."
Room is cleaned regularly for you.
layout of hotel confusing, especially during booking as the hotel is made up of 2 very different buidings as well as some chalet cabins at the back, I didn't know which one we were going to get properly until I'd arrived.
stayed on March 21, 2009
"The hotel is in an ideal location close to or within a short walk the town centre of York. However the hotel being quite old is looking a little tired and in need of a general facelift."
Within a 10 minute walk of the town center of York plus the pricefor the overnight stay was very reasonable.
The room whilst relatively clean could have done with redecorating as it looked a little tired and worn

"Enjoyable and value for money"
Really nice staff and comfortable atmosphere
from Sunderland UK, stayed on March 17, 2009
"The hotel met our needs, to use it as a base to have a weekend away in York."
The breakfast and Al Carte dinner was amazing, initially I thought it was expensive, but it was well worth the money. Also York city centre doesn't open up until later in the day, so if we hadn't booked breakfast would have gone hungry. The staff were also very friendly.
The rooms were very basic and nothing like the picture we had seen on the internet. It was quite disappointing, washed out bedding and nets, patched carpet and in desperate need of an update. The floor boards also really badly creaked and could hear every person walking past our room.

"Very good. It was a short one night stay but I picked Elmbank because of the online offer, and the building itself as I liked the look of the Art Nouveau decor which was very nice, lots of character which you do not get with modern hotels."
I had the three course meal in the evening which was very nice and the service was very good to. I was very please with the room which was a good size with a very modern spacious bathroom, as I had booked a single room it was better than I expected.
A small personal point I could have done with out Cliff Richard playing all the way through my evening meal. maybe a selection of different songs would have been better.

"Very DISAPOINTED"
easy to find
Hot water not working in shower ,small tv , decor shabby , All the Bar tables were dirty and we waited 10 minutes for a bar person to serve us still no one came so we went into york . was not worth the £74.00 we paid for the night i expected better, !!

"in general stay was ok if your just sleeping in your room and using the lounge."
location, lounge area very comfortable with lovely open fire.
Room dated, old furniture, remote control missing for tv and no spare at reception.Bathroom had mold around the bath.Windows in room and bar needed a damn good wash and clean.Keys did not work properly on the doors and noted all doors had holes drilled instead of proper locks fitted. Some reception members do not speak good english.Breakfast & evening meals very expensive £8.50 for breakfast.

"was okay but would have appreciated if 1the reception would have been well-aware of the hotel rules 2 pro-active basic courtesy towards the guests."
Warmly-heated and cosy. One gentleman at the reception in the evening of 10thfeb was very helpful in following up the radiator in my room.
The reception didnt quite know know the hotel rules and basic courtsey.Gave wrong details over the phone that the room had wifi though i fund later on the website, that it didnt.Secondly, the hotl is huhe nad for a first time visitor carrying huge luggage ,merely handing over the keys to hunt for the room by the reception is a major put-off. The flooring made noise specially in the night. No drinking water or adequate refereshments provided for a 2 night stay.

"Loved it!"
Lovely Hotel, the family room was great and the bath was huge! I also found the bar prices very reasonable compared to other hotels I have stayed in. The hotel staff were very helpful, particularly with our young children.
Could not get the shower to run hot, but the huge bath was good alternative!

"Saturday night stay and spur of the moment the only hotel that had availability. We guessed why when we arrived. Very run down rooms, shabby and no way a 3 star, where did they get that from? Too much of a walk and the cost paid on the internet was a discraceful. Never ever go again, needs some serious money spending on the venue."
lounge area was roomy
Rooms very outdated, shabby and a distinct mouldy smell. Very expensive, for what you got. Too far away from the town
