Very good location very centrally located. Budget price on line.
The hotel is tired and a little shabby as was the breakfast.

"This was a 'value-for-money' hotel. However, there are so many little things that the hotel could do to improve it's image. Signs and posters could be re-done and made more presentable and finding an old hair brush and old coat hangers on the top of the wardrobe, for example, is poor. The hotel's decor could be touched up."
The hotel was fair value for money. The breakfast was very good with plenty to eat and generally well cooked. Staff were friendly and efficient.
The bed and covers were awful. Very hard and old mattress with a very unappealing thin duvet and an old brown blanket thrown on almost as an after thought. No instructions on how to work the TV - which was not easy. Bed was actually broken but had been glued back together!

"Would reccomend to people who neat a clean warm bed for the night. "
Basic but very clean and a resonable price

"I was very happy with the stay as the staff were very nice and the stay was very peaceful. I can ignore the dirt if I don't look!"
Easy, helpful staff, central location
Quite dirty! Glass by sink was filthy, cutlary and tea cups at breakfast were also dirty. Paint peeling on many walls, very old and worn decor

"the hotel is in need of refurbishment"
the hotel provides cheap parking and good access for the city centre, the breakfast was good
the rooms are over priced for the standard of facilities on offer

"OK, adequate for the cost"
Staff were helpful and friendly
Room was a bit dull and small. Breakfast plates were small side plates so don't expect full English!

Some aging of the room , could use a general overhaul

"We came away not feeling satisfied, not exactly a "ripped off feeling", but just not refreshed and rested-as if we had just gone through the motions of staying in a conveniently placed city central hotel. The room price did not reflect the standard expected. "
Young staff very polite and pleasant. All you can eat breakfast good -seems to be the same each day? Secure car parking -more or less.
No bulb in bed-table lamp. Carpet well stained. The double bed had a very lumpy mattress, springs sticking up and a single waterproof sheet NOT covering it!There was no house maid to put things right.Had to request a duvet to cover the mattress so that we could sleep on it. Sink had numerous cracks.

"No complaints, well looked after and I have stayed here lots of times before. A central Southampton hotel at £45 per night B and B cant be complained at."
Well fitted out bathroom, quite nice room but an odd arrangement with two single beds at each end of the room Good breakfast. Nice central location Friendly night porter who let me in when I had been out late
Some of the hallways and common parts floor coverings look dated now but you get what you pay for

bath,sink loo was clean
Lino Tiles on bathroom floor loose curling up and corners broken and rough in places, shower curtain badle stained with what looked like hair dye at the top, shower curtain rail badly fixed and wobbled when curtain drawn/undrawn Fabric covered wall fixed headboards not straight on wall & both badly marked with hair grease stains, bottom of net curtains at windows dirty where windows had been open, carpet in bathroom doorway stained. Bed matresses very soft, pillows thin.Room 30 was whrer we stayed. Rest of hotel was shabby with chipped paint worn carpets and sagging sofas. went out for the evening and upon returning the double gates were locked & it took 15 mins for the night porter to answer the bell to ourselves & another couple.

"Basic hotel, but with very nice breakfast. I have stayed in the hotel twice before, and had much nicer rooms, so it is a question of luck which room you get..."
Great location, in walking distance of the town centre and the docks. Good breakfast, and helpful staff.
Very small room that seems to have been converted to en-suite recently, with the shower and toilet installed in an old cupboard - so not much space. Rather strange smell, too; maybe it used to be a smoking room?

"Only just adequate for an overnight stay."
Staff were good. Bed linen clean
Bathroom very poor condition. Floor tiles were coming unstuck and very easy to trip over. Hand basin cracked. Top cover on beds soiled and stained.

"Fantastic"
We were overall very pleased with our stay at the star hotel, we were looking for a romantic room for one night only and we were not disappointed, the room was just as described, everything was clean and place, the overall look of the hotel was good and breakfast wasnt bad either. Thank you to the staff for letting us after the doors were locked! We will definitely return

"You get what you pay for but it should be clean and not old and tatty."
Good breakfast.
Bedroom very poor, electric shower hopeless,tv did not work. Room 46 Colleague in room 47. Very bad,old dirty, washbasin in room next to TV and not in bathroom. Very noisy from exterior kitchen extractor fan at 06-30.

The hotel is in the center and is good value, a fair choice was offered at the breakfast tea or coffee, toasts, brown or white, cereals, juice, english breakfast, even though the croissants looked uninspiring.
No ensuite bathroom, but the hotel was full and I heard that only a few rooms don't have it.

"The Hotel is obviously 'old style' and is doing its best."
Public areas are looking tired and need re-decorating. En-suite facilities have obviously been 'squeezed in'.

"Liked the location, the breakfast, the value, could improve internet access and the property could use some fixing up."
Breakfast is well worth the money, great location, friendly staff
Leaky faucet in the room didn't bother me besides seeing water wasted, unreliable internet access

"well, that wasn't so bad, just make sure you are not on the first or ground floor, cos they have pub downstairs with the parties lasting over midnight - quite noisy. I couldn't get nice sleep till then."

"Would definetly stay at The Star again. We had room only so can't comment on breakfast, but it did look very good value."
Brilliant location for west quay and all major shops. Staff very friendly and helpful. Twin room large with good bathroom facilities.
Having read some reviews we were expecting some bad points, but we didn't really have any gripes. Hotel is oldy worldy but charming.
