Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery

A hidden gem at the centre of the University of Leeds campus, the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery offers temporary exhibitions throughout the year as well as displays of treasures from the University Art Collection.

The University's exceptional collection includes British and European paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings and watercolours, from 17th century to now.

Leeds Indsutrial Museum at Armley Mills

Situated on the River Aire, Armley Mills Museum explores the city of Leeds rich Industrial past with exhibits and displays from the 18th century to the present day in the clothing and textile industry, print, cinematography, photography, engine and locomotive manufacture.

There are several working exhibits including a spinning mule from the 1900's, 1920's style cinema, steam engine and a water wheel. Other areas of interest are the tailoring gallery, optics gallery for cinema projections. The museum is housed in a woollen mill built in the 17th century; the largest of its kind in the world, set in a beautiful riverside location. The original mills were destroyed by fire during 1805 and replaced with the one standing today.

Leeds City Council took over the Mills in 1969 to maintain the city's heritage and create the museum highlighting the importance of the city's industrial past.

Kirkstall Abbey

Set amidst beautiful parkland in a stunning riverside location on the banks of the River Aire in Leeds, are the large scale preserved ruins of Kirkstall Abbey - still at full height. Built between 1152-1160's, Kirkstall Abbey is a wonderful example of a medieval Cistercian Abbey, with many of the walls still intact.

The Abbey was closed in 1534 with the dissolution of religious houses, on the order of Henry VIII. Some the outbuildings were used by farmers, the lead was removed from the roof, and the monks were sent to other abbey's. It is now nearing the completion of a £4.1 million restoration with a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

At Kirkstall Abbey you will discover woodland trails, recreation spaces, tennis courts, and children's playground. Visitors centre with audio visual presentations and on going activities. Find out about life as a monk during the 12th century.

3.5 miles from city centre, off main A65 adjacent to Abbey House Museum. Short walk across the road to Abbey House Museum gatehouse cafe. Buses 33, 33a and 757 from city centre. Nearest train station Headingley 1/4 mile away.

Abbey House Museum

Experience a journey through time with all the sights and sounds of the Victorian age in the recreated streets of Leeds set the 1880's in Abbey House living museum. Original artefacts, fixtures, fittings and displays of the bygone age make the streets very believable.

Compare the poorer and richer areas, how they lived, their health, toys, games and dolls and the Victorian shops, barbers, grocers, hardware shop, tobacconist, clay pipe makers and drinking house. Victorian schoolroom and Sunday school that are very different from the classes of today. Costume collection - on special days staff wear traditional costumes as they walk the streets.

Owned by the Butler family until 1925, Abbey House was then purchased by Leeds Corporation, the house then became a museum in 1927, the 1950's saw Victorian streets added.

A wonderful and interesting experience for adults and children. Children can meet their favourite nursery rhyme characters or dress up in the interactive Childhood Gallery.
